Devastating Tornado Damage in Tuscaloosa

I know that Midtown Village is gone, but I haven't heard about what fatalities were there. I'm a senior at UA and have e-mailed all of the classmates I did not have phone numbers for. So far, everyone I have heard from is fine physically. However, I have yet to hear from some people who lived in Midtown and just off of 15th street.

Also, can anyone attest to the phone service in Cullman? I tried to call my freshman roommate there but the call wouldn't connect.

It is just too eaerly to get info on the number of deaths, much less who all those unfortunate souls were. All I can tell you is to hope and pray.

Phone service is spotty everywhere right now, especially in affected areas. People I know miles from the major damage are still without phone and power. Power is still out over a large part of Tuscaloosa and even cell service is spotty at best due to infrastructure damage.

I hope you hear good news soon.

Thanks and take them our prayers. Just read where the Fire Chief of Hackleburg is requesting flashlights, because he is afraid of people using candles could lead to a fire. And they have no water to put out fires.

I hate that my first post is about this. I feel like my second home is hit and there is nothing I can do.also my fiance is from Phil Campbell and they lost 3 of 4 houses on their property. Hardly anything is standing in that community. I pray the number of deaths dont get any worse then they are

Midtown Village is NOT gone. There is some exterior damage to the Starbucks/Chipotle/FiveGuys wing, but the complex is still standing. In fact, Jim and Nicks has been in front of Barnes and Noble serving food since yesterday morning.

Headed to Phil Campbell & Hackleburg with my agency to help coordinate some support. I'll report back later guys & maybe have some pictures.

Be careful. Helped out distributing supplies in Russellville and Haleyville last night. Hackleburg, Phil Campbell, parts of Mt. Hope among other areas are completely devastated. It is horrible.

Thanks for that, Prof. I live on the north side of campus and got out of town yesterday morning, so I never got to survey the damage. I heard that Iguana Grill sustained some severe damage (hearsay, and I wasn't able to corroborate it, but it scared me anyway) so I worried about the people in the complex. I'm glad it was just a rumor.

The scenes are heart wrenching. I left TTown 30 years ago but a part of me still calls it home. I know what Coach Bryant meant when he said " Mama Called ". Mama has been hurt badly but she will get up again soon !!

I don't doubt there was damage, and some of it serious, but the structures are still standing. Clearly visible in many photos I've seen and no mention of serious structural problems. Fortunately that facility was just to the south and east of the storm's path.

thanks. i talked to my dad in haleyville today. they don't have power and just got their water back. he told me parts of haleyville did actually get hit and some houses were destroyed. he knows one of the PC rescue guys and apparently talked to him, but my dad didn't say much more than its bad and pretty much everything is gone.

he hadn't heard the extent of the damage tuscaloosa yet. im really worried about phil cambell and hackleburg, these small towns have limited resources in normal times. he said the food bank at the church is trying to help out as much as possible.

From what I have heard and am hearing.. The death totals will rise for weeks. We have to realize that communication channels for the first couple days were almost zero. You have thousands of people living outside of the big cities who we don't even know if they are missing right now. You have hundreds of others across the state who have been reported as missing. You have millions of tons of debris that will have to be moved to uncover everything. You have lakes, ponds and rivers that have been littered with trash and who knows what. Just like with 911 and Katrinia some bodies will never be found. We can only pray for the families and do everything we can to help these areas recover.

How far up 15th street did it get. It looked like it came from just across the street from the Downs

Tha damage began at McAllister's and ended at McFarland Blvd as far as 15th street is concerned. Pretty much everything was destroyed from there down on the side of the road McAllister's was on and it crossed just before Hokkaido. I know many people have seen the pictures, but they don't do it justice. It is utter destruction. All of the homes that surrounded Forrest Lake are gone.

I thought the area around 15th street was bad, but a policeman told me Holt and Alberta City is worse. It is hard to imagine.

Spent the day running food to Alberta. I don't ever want to see that level of destruction again. Truly heartbreaking.

I head Finebaum say that 447 people were still missing...and I figured I must have misunderstood the number. I'm praying it's a mistake.

Unfortunately that is the number right now. Mayor Maddox says he thinks there are many duplicates and people already found in that number. Let's hope so.

I heard a 2nd hand report today about the body of a 7 y.o. boy found outside Pell City. They don't know who he is, or where he came from. Evidently, the wind sucked him from somewhere, and he was deposited here. If his parents are even living, they have to be totally freaking out from the unknown.

It is true. Just came back from Alberta City. I was delivering water and helping move trees and it truly is devastating. I have seen 15th street and the Forest lake area and it is just terrible.
