Devastating Tornado Damage in Tuscaloosa

My sentiments EXACTLY!!! I've donated $, clothes and trying to find somewhere to give blood and still feel like I've done nothing......I have an awful feeling there's not enough help there right NOW! I just pray that's not the case.

You've done what is needed now. The major needs are still personal hygiene products, baby supplies, toiletries, etc. It's the immediate every day type stuff that people are calling for.

Moved my daughter out of Tut last night and back home safely. We left bedding, clothes, and a futon/couch and asked the folks @ Tut to be sure someone received it that was needing it.

New confirmed death numbers. 326 and 238 in Alabama. These numbers make this outbreak more deadly than the 1974 tornado outbreak that all storms are compared to.

SIAP

For anyone around Starkville

The MSU Student Association is sponsoring a collection of toiletry supplies to support fellow students at the University of Alabama affected by tornadoes. SA President Rhett Hobart said needs include toilet paper, toothpaste and deodorant. Items may be dropped off at the Union Dawg House until 5 p.m. Monday. The SA will deliver the items Tuesday. For more, call 662-325-3917 or email krh189@saffairs.msstate.edu.

Saw it on Tigerdroppings......thought it might help to share it.

I don't know what I can do to help over here.......We are gathering families to put together a neighborhood garage sale to raise money to send........but I'm open to other ideas.

Amazing satellite imagery showing the straight line path of the storm from I-359 to Alberta:

Wow. We've just got power back up here in Jasper a few hours ago. Put Cordova on the list of places hit hard. Seeing that map, wow. Back in '94, the first place me and the mrs. called home was a second floor apartment overlooking a fire station in Alberta. Looks like it got wiped out.

Guys, just got internet back here in Limestone county. For all of those trying to get in touch with people in north Alabama, most are still without power. Cell reception is spotty at best. Powers not expected to be back on for most until mid next week. All 8 transmission lines from Brownsferry Nuclear plant to HSV were taken out. We had no less that four F-4 tornados up here, and two will probably be upgraded to F-5's. The F-4 that hit Limestone county went through about a mile south of my house. Whole subdivisions gone. We've lost about 80 people up here in north AL. Just no words left.

Please pray for all the families affected. It's just been unreal.

Just got back from working with our So. Baptist Disaster Relief chainsaw crew in Phil Campbell. If any of you worked with cleanup along the Gulf Coast after Katrina would recognize the same scenes as we saw down there today. We worked primarily to remove trees off of houses and clearing debris on one block. We're returning tomorrow morning to move down the street to the next one. One tree at a time, one house at a time, one block at at time. That's how it's going to roll down there. Lots of Nat. Guard, State Troopers and the local constabulary to maintain order and keep traffic moving. FEMA can take over some of the organization since EMA has finished with body recovery. Lots and lots of volunteers converging on site. Coach Alvin Briggs called us on the way home and said he wanted to bring a couple of bus loads of his football players down to help with the massive cleanup that will be needed to get these folks back to some level of normalcy, if that's possible. Utility trucks are working real hard to get power back up, and it should be a priority. I could ramble on here some more but you get the picture. Pray for all involved here in the scenarios like Phil Campbell that our fair state and some surrounding states are experiencing. Do what you can to help those close to you......and Roll Tide.

Angie, HOSA is hosting a blood drive Monday at the school. It was already scheduled, but the timing is perfect. I'll be there at 8 sharp with my sleeve rolled up & my 20 oz Coke. :)

I don't know if any other communities are facing this but we have looters in Tuscaloosa and Alberta City. THe kindness and generosity outweighs it 99.9% but their is still that fraction that I truly cannot understand. Three were arrested trying to break in to Best Buy who were only stopped because Midtown has their own security. They were from Atlanta. Apparently they are "professional Looters" who go to these places immediately after the devestation. I've seen a couple "I WILL SHOOT" signs. The fact that they are having to put that message up distresses me.

Scratch THAT!!!

We have just been informed that they are going to limit the number of volunteers allowed to go into Holt.

Ok guys, lots to report.

I don't know how much help I am, I don't do much. I make maps. But I did sit in a room with some very knowledgeable people who have worked lots of disaster relief in the past.

I heard some pretty awful stories. There are orphans now who were members of extremely loving families just 2 or 3 days ago. There are people who are in the same situation Siran Stacy was in a few years ago. Firefighters came across people of all ages and they'll have those images in their minds the rest of their lives. It's awful.

Here's what I learned. If you want to volunteer, please wait a few more days. Most of these communities are still in search and rescue mode, although they are gearing down from that. Right now, many of us would just be in the way. When they enter recovery mode, THAT's when they'll need help. Local, State & Federal workers can't help clear debris from privately owned land. That's where volunteers come in. It's up to the homeowners to move trees/debris and they need your help.

If you want to donate food/supplies, PLEASE donate to Hackleburg. Encourage your churches/local charities to make special trips to Hackleburg. Lots has been donated to Phil Campbell, but a lot less has been donated to Hackleburg. The Hackleburg situation is special. I don't want to sound like Phil Campbell or any other communities aren't important because they are, and they're in dire straits, but Phil Campbell still has structures standing and they appear to be in VERY capable hands. Hackleburg is in ruins. I don't know how they'll recover. They need lots of love and support. As of 3:00 this afternoon, the National Guard still hadn't made their way to Hackleburg. Communication is so bad in Hackleburg right now that it hasn't been made completely clear to news outlets just how bad it is.

Counseling. If any of you have any experience in counseling and want to help, I'd strongly recommend calling Franklin County EMA or Marion County EMA and offer your help. The firefighters and rescue workers have come across things none of us should ever have to see.

I didn't have a chance to take any pictures, but I'll try again if I'm able to head down early next week.

Trina, THANKS for that update!! I will be there asap. Tim has a Dr appt and it will be right after that.

RedStar-Thank you for sharing. All of us are heart broken seeing people in so much distress. Hopefully people will come in the tens of thousands when the time comes to help people clear their personal property. Be safe and post updates when you can. ROLL TIDE!!
