Devastating Tornado Damage in Tuscaloosa

My daughter has decided to take her grades instead of taking her finals. She said she doesn't think she could concentrate to study or take any final any time in the near future. So far she knows that she has lost one of her friends & classmate to the tornado. She is devastated. We are very fortunate...her apt complex University Village is off 10th and it went unscathed. Hoping that she comes home for the weekend. She has a job in Northport and is registered for summer school so she is somewhat reluctant to leave T-town. As I told her last night I have no idea what she is going thru emotionally but I have a great sense of the loss as well...I was born in DCH in 1961 and lived in Alberta City for a few years with my grandmother. She has passed, but when we come to town we always drive by her old house. I have no idea if the house survived. Tuscaloosa will always be my home no matter where I live. Prayers to all those suffering and thanks for those who are there helping in the recovery effort!

Anyone up for doing a list of people or businesses you're curious about? Last I checked they've not released the names of those killed, and I've got a number of people - most of whom were just acquaintances - that I'm very curious to find out about.

New Orleans got all the national media attention but they were on the left side of Katrina.

Had they built their levees correctly they wouldn't have even had damage because Katrina hit the Mississippi Coast and not New Orleans.

That's not known by many but it's the truth.
I saw first hand with Georgia Power. We were in Bay St. Louis. Homes on the beach obliterated. Debris in trees were 20' to 25' from water surge. I've been doing hurricanes since 1979 and that is by far the worst I've seen. I'll try to do 1 pic if I can find.

i couldnt agree with you more Alasippi; it ...... me off even today to hear new orleans and Katrina mentioned together....LOUISIANA'S DAMAGE WAS SELF INFLICTED...The levee failed due to a barge breaking it; had they prepared properly; the damage wouldnt have been near as bad...Mississippi and ALABAMA was where the focus should have been for katrina...FTR, yes...i am from Louisisana and was stationed in new orleans for 8 years...i had left one year prior to the hurricane. My heart goes out for Tuscaloosa and the whole state of ALABAMA.

do you mean fountainbleu apts down on 27th? if so, you can see them in the flyover video about 2/3 of the way through. one of the corners was flattened
I saw that and immediately called one of my buddies from school. I said, dude, your old apartment is nothing but a pile of bricks and my old one has no roof, and so and so's is..., you get the picture. Quite the change form the old Fontainbleu days.

Man, the video and pictures are working me over the more of it I see. Unbelievable.

i knows it's a little ways down 15th, so probably/hopefully ok, but does any know about the Waysider?

I watched the draft, but guess i missed the beginning, is there video of Saban and the players on stage? or video of his interview?

yep, the unit where i lived had the roof ripped off but was still standing. the other corner was completely flattened.

You know after a while you begin to repeat and read over and over the number of dead and you get a little numb to it. I know while I was still saddened by each one I began to just hear it as a number. Well that all change for me this morning when they showed on the local DFW news the young lady that was killed from Dallas. She really became the face of that ever growing number of confirmed dead for me. I can't help but imagine her getting up Wed just like any other school day and going about her normal business. She probably studied a little, may have had a couple classes, went to the gym and probably even met some friends for lunch on the strip. All the time she had no idea her time on earth was coming to an abrupt end. Not because of any bad choice she made like drinking and driving or drving too fast, but just because she was standing in the wrong place. It's just sad, so sad. It sure makes me appreciative of today, even if work isn't going well, or I'm stuck in traffic. God bless each and every one of those lost Wed and God be with their families to give them strength.

Blue Tuna Tiger at ATPB, God bless him, posted some key emergency response information that everyone should distribute around for those affected by the Tornado. Here's the link.

Alabama Tornado, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Releif, Red Cross, FEMA, U of A, Toomer's for Tuscaloosa

Here's also a link to the Red Cross site where people can search for loved ones or friends and list themselves as "alive and well" for anyone who may be searching for them.

I haven't seen this one posted yet on the thread. GulfCoastBamaFan posted a bunch of links on his website yesterday for anyone that can help
