Getting Ready for Spring Battles!

Golesh knows who is buttering the bread... If he can upset us year one it gives him some real breathing room and the ability to snag some control.
Only for the short term. Malzahn still faced questions about his job at AU even after being the most successful AU coach against CNS. As soon as he lost to CNS, the coaching seat got hot again, and the other wins outside of the Alabama game were almost irrelevant.

I had thought Carroll would be at RT, and Mal Waldrep at RG. Mal has looked really good in practice. So I hear.

I'm not negative about Carrolls potential, but I think the only reason he was out at OT was due to the past OL coach not having a clue. I'm not really sure what he was doing last year. I know he was a TF, but there were a LOT of times he just didn't seem to know what the heck he was doing out there, not just call wise, but overall technique in being out in space. Pretty sure Carroll was an IOL in HS, and it showed up on film.

What I've read confirms my earlier post.

DBs had a great day. A few INTs. A true freshman had a Pic6.

Concerning the QBs, Mack struggled more compared to Russell. Russell had his own struggles, but his abilities "flashed" more, which is consistent with what we've heard the entire spring.

I have a feeling, and I hope I'll be wrong, but I think we're going to have struggles at the QB position for the first part of the season. I think the second half we'll be fine because we'll have learned from the growing pains.

I have a feeling if Mack and Russell are really that "neck and neck" in the current race and AM is thought to only have an advantage because he knows the system better that means Russell is hands down the most talented.

And if we are going to struggle early with either, you go with Russell 100% of the time!

That's my view as well. If both are going to struggle, you struggle with the younger, more talented QB.

Golesh will have to deliver something more than just Bama wins for sure... But if he goes for 0/2 in his first two... That seat will be molten lava! He's got a steep curve... I don't think that the bunch he brought with him are anywhere near the equivalent to the core that Indiana got with their guy.

to me it depends on one thing. Will the 'more talented' guy make more mistakes that could cost you a game or 2, despite the upside, versus a guy who might not make the 'electric, flash' plays as often, but also won't make the critical mistakes that can cost games.

I'll take the guy who won't make the critical mistakes that end up losing games.

The flip side... Prep and rep Keelon and he has five very winnable games to stop making the mistakes and the upside... The coaches have a tough call coming up!

I get that. It's smart. If it works. But I've always favored playing the more talented guy when the situation is the way it's being described.

But, it's the whole package. Supposedly, AM was having trouble with scrambling/accuracy while throwing. He might not throw the ball into the other team's hands, but sacks lead to punts most of the time. On the other hand, Russell is reportedly more fluid and he also has a lightning-fast release.

I think the key will be "managing" Russell's first few games, if he's named the starter. We've got an ideal situation to break in a new QB (which would apply to either), but treat Russell the way we did AJ in 2011. He had growing pains, but by the time we played LSU in the NC game, he was playing like a steady sophomore!

Of course, if one is making general mistakes but the other is making critical mistakes, you definitely go with the one who's not making the critical mistakes. But if they're making the same types of mistakes, and both are basically struggling in areas that are on the same level, then I'm going with the younger QB.

The report that has circulated regarding the last scrimmage is Mack had 2 INTs and should have had 2 more. And Russell had 1 pic 6.

CKD press conference from yesterday was either severely edited or was the most coherent post-practice update he has given since he has been here. Didn't give anything away but was frank about the tempo of the practices. He did much better with his comments...
