Backup QB Guillon quits over lack of playing time

Efforts to reach Guillon for comment were unsuccessful. But his father, Doug Guillon, said Tuesday night that "this is the angriest I've ever seen my son. Something happened that he's not very happy about."

Doug Guillon declined to elaborate, but added "he's one angry young man. It's pretty evident what's going on."

Yeah...it was all a big conspiracy to keep MG from playing.

What is evident??

I mean.. he had a beef when Pennington was QB. JPW didn't play that bad.
The season is over in 4 months.
All the hard practices are over.
If he just waits, he leaves a respected player..

This seems like a very spiteful move.

I have zero respect for quiters. I know that he probably carried a chip on his shoulder because he was the #2 and not seeing alot of action, but that's football and not a reason to quit in the middle of the season. If your unhappy, at least have the dignity to quit during the Spring or Summer. If he's not getting respect, do like BIGyowski says and earn it. He was #2 on the damn depth chart and was only an injury away from becoming the #1. It's not like that hasn't happened anytime in the past at Bama. He has left this team in a bind and I hope he realizes that.

BTW, I hope he drops out, too. He doesn't deserve to be associated with this school anymore.

Jeez. Come on, folks. How much respect would you have for somebody just going through the motions? Guillon might be the greatest person ever or a genuine jerk (I don't know him so I don't know), but he decided that he didn't want to play football and made a decision based on that. The timing is unfortunate, but none of us get to choose when insight hits. Consider the two basic possibilities:

1. Guillon carefully considered this, decided that his heart wasn't really in it and that he wasn't inspired to commit the time and energy required, and stepped away from it.
2. Guillon made a rash decision based on pride and petulance.

Either way, would it really be better that was still the #2 quarterback?

In any case, it's done. I hope for him that his decision was more of the former and less of the latter, but ultimately that's his question to answer. I wish him well and hope that he can put his energy into something that he finds more rewarding.

LOL

 Eureka! That's it! Now we know why our team has made close games out of Duke, Vandy etc...it has been a collective effort by the players and coaches to keep MG off of the field! Lord, I knew it had to be something. Now that the mission has been accomplished, they can get back to playing Alabama football! ;)

For what it's worth, in my years of following college football very few transfers ever work out. Usually the player transferring winds up with the same issues at his new school that he had with the school he left. Guillon went to UM as a highly touted QB and wound up 3rd or 4th on their depth chart. Not sure if he had any real playing time there. He then transfers to UA and is firmly entrenched behind Brodie Croyle and in his two starts is lifted for Spencer Pennington. I assume his decision to leave had a lot to do with his lack of playing time; however, he supposedly had the same opportunity that JPW had. I am sure there are behind the scene issues we will never know but Jimmy Barnes now has to be ready to step in.

I'll pull a daddy Guillon and decline to elaborate, but MG does not have the mental capacity OR stability to be a college quarterback. Two different teams with a variety of coaches have realized this. The guy has issues that must be dealt with on a couch, not on the practice field.

Marc Guillon doesn't like Mike Shula...Mike Shula doesn't like Marc Guillon.

What does he owe to any of you to stay in a situation that wasn't productive for him?

For those of you that wish to bash him perhaps you should focus more on a team that appears to be inching closer and closer to chaos and turmoil from the inside out.

Once the floodgates are opened...

I feel sorry that MG made the decision and I hope it is best for him and best for the team. Obviously, he was given every chance for playing time -- no sane coach would play a lesser QB. I wish him well and hope he has success in his future endeavors.

for him to hang around as the #2 guy as long as he did, there has to be more to this than playing time.

not knowing what happened and will likely never know, i do not think it is fair to criticize the young man for leaving.

That's the question that occurred to me, though I wasn't going to mention it until you just did. Is this an isolated "Guillon" thing or a symptom of some broader issues?

Unless I hear otherwise, I'll just happily assume it's a simple playing time issue with Guillon and all else is well. ;)

I think that it is pretty clear from what was in the media that Mark was upset that he was getting essentially no playing time. I think that his is a result of Shula's philosphy for using QBs a view that probably runs deep in him, back to his playing days. Any individual who can play in the SEC as a starting QB has to be brash, self confident and figure that he can do it all. They want to take EVERY snap. I bet Shula was no different. And he probably vowed that someday, when HE was a coach, he would back his starter to the hilt and ensure that he got as many snaps as he could ever handle. And this is exactly how he has been running the program with regard to QB play. Unfortunately, what a starting QB sees as best for himself may not be best from a larger perspective. It's like a five year old vowing that when HE grows up and gets to be a Daddy, he's going to buy his five year old a knife and a BB gun and let him eat all of the candy and ice cream that he wants. Of course, most people do follow throuh on this vow when they become parents and those that do are not acting in the long term best interests of the child. The same may be said of Shula's handling of his QBs. He relies almost exculsively on the starter and gives the backup little if any playing time. We saw that last year with Brodie and are aeeing it again this year. This works fine as long as the starter can play, but if he gets injured, you have a probelm. We saw this when Brodie got knocked out two years ago and Spencer and Mark went in essentially green to replace him. I would hope that Shula would have learned from that experience, but the fact that Mark got almost no playing time suggests otherwise. Those that do not learn from their mistakes are bound to repeat them. And IMHO Mark's departure paints a big target on JPW's back. And if he goes down, the QB situation will be dire, since there has been essentially no contingency planning for this eventuality. If JPW gets injured, the Tide will truly be in a world of hurt. And if this happens, Shula's cold seat will start to warm rapidly.
