why wouldn't he say it? It's been happening for decades. You get dinged up, you get a shot, you go back out.
You are right AJ, but it usually goes unsaid. I was suprised he said it because while many of us know it happens, it isn't something the casual fan wants to hear about. Many want to pretend a coach would never let a kid play that was hurting, much less give him a pain shot and shove him back in the game.

you're probably right. I just figured it was one of those things that everyone know happens....like getting an IV at halftime, getting stitches in the locker room, etc.

File this in the "If anyone else said it, it would be no big deal, but since Kiffin said it, it furthers the case for Kiffin not being able to control what comes out of his mouth."
In isolation no big deal, but this is one of those things a coach doesn't talk about on a show for the fans. Saban, Meyer, Richt, or whoever says this? No big deal. It's a slip up. For Kiffin, it's a continuation of a pattern.
That's my take.

I get cortisone shots in my spine 3 times a year, and they help tremendously with pain management, but according to WebMD, the shots are actually corticosteroid shots, although they apparently don't help to bulk up muscles.
Corticosteroids are different from anabolic steroids, which some athletes use to build bigger muscles. Examples of corticosteroid medications include triamcinolone, cortisone, prednisone and methylprednisolone.

I disagree somewhat. If Coach Saban said we "shot a kid up so he could play" you'd be hearing howls from all over, especially lee county, about how he is the devil incarnate, not concerned about student/athlete welfare, why isn't the ncaa investigating this, blah, blah, blah.

I do agree that this probably happens on every single team in whatever they call Division I now. That doesn't mean you should talk about it and certainly not in a cavalier fashion. Best left in the NFL, assuming, of course, you didn't get canned from your nfl job. And I don't think it's anybody's business what healthcare treatment ANY college athlete gets, outside of "keep Joe Bob in your thoughts and prayers, he's having knee surgery".

It's just very un-head-coach-like to talk about players injury or medical treatments. It happens with every team but is so seldom mentioned in the press.

I think it would be a big deal if any of those coaches said it. But - that's the point - none of those other coaches would be so naive as not to understand what the impact would be...

:)

The walk on center had to have a cortisone shot is the reason UT lost to UCLA? :)
Nope, don't think he thought that. In fact, I don't think he thought at all - just one more shot from the hip. I'm sure the Acting Prez is wondering if he remembered the lecture. That's got to give gray hairs...

Of course not. Everybody knows the universe was working against Tennessee this past weekend.:p
Kiffin went so far as to blame the cosmos for the UCLA loss. "The ball just didn't bounce our way," he said. "They had some good karma working for them with those fumbles. I don't know of anybody who has six fumbles and five of them bounce back."
Um, coach, you didn't just think that, you actually said it out loud.
Kiffin should stop mouthing off, but he won't - CFB News - FOX Sports on MSN

I agree with those who contend the action itself - cortisone shot - falls in the no-big-deal category. The issue is a coach who lacks the wisdom to understand you don't flippantly speak of such things. You say "We treated him at halftime and he was ready to go in the 3rd quarter!" Or something like that.
