I’m trying to understand the appeal of the UNC QB over what we already have.
He's a top 5 draft prospect for the 2024 draft. He averages 320 yards passing a game and has 35 TDs to 5 INTs plus over 600 yards rushing and 6 TDs on the ground.

He would be an immediate upgrade for whoever Bama would presumably start in 2023.

Ok so thank you all for the info. I honestly wasn't aware of his numbers or ability... I haven't watched UNC at all since that early game they played against, was it App State? Where both teams scored in the 60s. Or was that last year? Things tend to run together these days for me.

Anyway, I was just under the impression Ty Simpson had a ton of ability. And the fact that Milroe was ahead of him this season means nothing when you consider Nick Saban's history with QBs. He is reluctant to change up the depth chart during the season. We also know that when he does play the backup in garbage time, it's basically to run garbage plays.

I just feel we are losing something with how all of this is going down. I'm not sure I can put my finger on it. And as for losing 3 games next year... well we lost 2 each of the past 2 seasons with Bryce... it's more than the QB is my point.

Those teams won't ever make their conference championship game. I'd argue instead that the ACC is not a real P5 conference.

I did say NC was a P5 in theory.
The ACC reminds me of the Germanic Principalities during the Enlightenment. Royal Blood (Power 5) but of no threat. Whenever a king or queen needed a spouse, they'd get a prince or princess from some German Duchy. Whenever a Great Power in football needs a Power 5 win, just schedule an ACC team for an out-of-conference game.

He can play...there is no doubt about that. Is he coming to UA? I sure don't know...but I do know some UNC fans who are not happy today!
Is there a specific reason he is looking to transfer? It doesn't really make sense to me. He's playing for the team he grew up cheering for and he's obviously getting playing time. I just feel like I'm missing something on this one.

I am not sure about any of this regarding Maye. We all saw Milroe in the one game and have not really seen Simpson, just heard the hype.

I will throw this out, BOB is the OC and the qb coach. We all expect him to be gone. A new (decent) OC should be able to develop either of these guys (Milroe and/or Simpson) in a way that BOB hasn't been able to. In Milroe's defense, he has been under BOB for two years now. We get the next Kiffin or Sark and I believe these two will be different.

If Drake Maye comes what will that do to our future signees, Holstein and Sayin and the other highly touted signee? I don't think it is a good idea unless Milroe and Simpson are not developing and are inadequate.
I must say that I don't like the way the sport is going.
That may not be their fault, coaching.

The potential problem I see with free agency..errr..the transfer portal is the collateral damage it could potentially do to a program if the reason for the transfer doesn't workout. Take Maye for example, let's say he transfers in, Simpson AND Milroe transfer out. The Maye transfer doesn't workout and we're left with a very inexperienced and young QB room, which basically renders us "starting over" at the QB position.

The transfer portal isn't just roses, it comes with the thorns as well.

Hope it is not Simpson
If you bring in Maye, Simpson and Milroe are probably gone.
At least one for sure. Maybe both because it would be a damning indication of the staff’s thoughts on their ability to lead this team next year to bring in a transfer.

Haven't read past the 1st page and it may have been discussed already in succeeding pages, but this is going to be a huge issue (I hate the word "issue" because it suggests problems) but it is a double edged sword.

When Maye first committed I was excited about him and he's really blossomed into a great college QB, like we thought he would.

Now, I don't know where he stands in terms of top college QBs compared to others in the nation, but I get the impression he's be near the top of level 2 behind just a couple of other guys like Bryce, Shroud or maybe Williams???

But I'm extremely concerned about how a guy like Maye transferring will impact our current QB room (current players and unsigned recruits). You don't bring in a guy like DM unless you fully expect he'll start and he wouldn't transfer unless he's been assured he'd likely start. He's and one and done, essentially (going to the draft in '24), so what does that say to the true Freshman Ty Simpson, who is expected to compete for the job next year and maybe have 2-3 years as a starter if he won it???

This kinda stuff has to be navigated in the age of the transfer portal and NIL. I'm just not sure what's the best way forward.

We've talked all year about the erosion of the Bama standard and unfortunately taking players from the portal over those who are in the program already will just exacerbate the issue. You can see the erosion in CBB also, taking one and done players vs good 2-3 year players has hurt some of the major programs significantly. Taking him may help one season but does it help beyond that with the current players or future? I'd vote no. NIL and the Transfer portal are killing the NCAA's cash cows...CFB and CBB.

The goal was to bring "fairness" to the players. Well, here it is...

What if the bringing in of Maye is an attempt to go out on a high note? Starting quarterback, very good stats, plug and play with his offensive coordinator, etc. etc.

Seems a bit like everyone is jumping the gun. What was actually said was this: "One of the biggest concerns I have for college football." Not sure how to stop players being tampered with and bought. "Teams tried to buy off our team last year."

Slow your roll. Simpson will be the QB next year and Maye will still be at UNC unless he decides to follow Longo somewhere. I don't see that being Bama.

Maye to Alabama was mentioned a while back. Not sure of the source. But if it has "legs" it could happen for a couple of reasons. He first committed to us (so there's an openness to playing at Bama). And if Longo is a possible OC candidate it grows even longer legs.

FWIW, I'm fully on board with Simpson. Think he can be a star for us. If we revert back to more of a balanced power run team with equally good downfield play action passing he seems like the perfect fit. Maybe an even better version of AJMac. But just like AJ, TS will likely need several games to get acclimated to the position before we start seeing his full potential.

Upside with DM is he is that ready QB #1 from day one with his NC experience (especially if Longo comes).

It's a double-sided discussion and there are positives on both sides.

WMack was the first person to mention a possible transfer by Maye, who committed to us but then walked it back after pressure from his family.

The coaches know better than us how ready our young QBs are to take over. Maybe they aren't. If so, I'd be thrilled with one year of Drake Maye, who is a great young player.

But as BamaMoon said above..will you still be thrilled when DM free agencies in and JM and TS head out..then DM gets hurt? That one year thrill would go down the crapper. I hate this free agency portal.

Can’t say Nick didn’t warn them.
And until some type of restrictions are put in place as to “immediate eligibility” when transferring, it will remain this way.
As I’ve said before, I have no issues with immediate eligibility for grad transfers. Nor did I have a big problem for transfer in true “hardship” situations.
But this bouncing from school to school, year to year, by some is absurd.

I’m guessing one of them will stay

Because if they don’t then we would’ve only had one quarterback anyway. because it sounds like the assumption is that if they were going to be backup they would leave.

So that leaves you with just a starting quarterback anyway. And if that’s the case give me the kid who’s competing for a Heisman over the two we have now
