To me it's no different than somone escaping from prison. If they get caught they back to prison. You don't let them go free just because they were successful in escaping. RTR:BigA:

The blame here lies with Houston Nutt for taking him in the first place. Unlike the NFL, it isn't against the NCAA rules to commit a crime. Masoli did not violate one single NCAA rule. Punishment for breaking the law is purely the schools' and the coaches' decisions. And this isn't the first legal but ethically questionable thing that Nutt has done and it certainly won't be the last either.
I write a weekly volunteer sports opinion column for the Ocean Springs Record, a small weekly here in Ocean Springs.

I received a great deal of wrath from Ole Miss fans because I absolutely bashed Nutt for inviting Masoli to join the team.

I wrote..."A few weeks ago Nutt dismissed wide reciever Patrick Patterson from the team for violation of a team rule. I don't know what team rule Patterson violated but if it was more serious than marijuana possession or theft then it didn't make the newspaper".

I followed that with...."For the first time in his career Nutt has exhibited that he is capable of using a double standard when it comes to disciplining his players. That he can come down hard on an under achieving wide receiver but he can look the other way when he needs a starting Quarterback.
Players are smart, and they can see straight through such inconsistent leadership.
Nutt's decision to invite Masoli could have a tremendously negative effect on his current team and future program".

So I agree with you.

At the same time I was very vocal in the thread where Masoli had been denied clearance by the NCAA because I felt they had no basis for such a denial.

So I've looked at this particular situation from about every angle it could be looked at...lol

I guess my final analysis would be....Nutt never should have allowed him on the team but the NCAA never should have said he couldn't.

Ultimately.....I think Nutt may have hurt the program long term for the sake of having a one year starter at QB.

Agree 100%. This is the crux of the whole argument, IMO. The NCAA appeared to try to do what they felt Ole Miss should have done from the beginning.

Apparently the team rules at Oregon are more stringent than they are at Ole Miss.

I don't profess too know the circumstances surrounding whatever this young man did, but if Chip Kelly thought it was bad enough to kick his #1 star QB off the team, I'd assume there was a good reason.

Everyone, especially Houston Nutt and Ole Miss fans, know this whole situation is not about furthering this young mans education or giving him yet another chance, it's about him playing football. He can play football at Ole Miss, he would just have too wait till next year. Sometimes you just have too "own" your mistakes and pay the price, and this seems like a very small one.

Maybe he did abide by the "letter of the law" involving the NCAA, but sometimes what's legal and what's right can be two different things, and while him playing this year at Ole Miss may be "by the book", it's not right.

I'm no Ole Miss fan, but he broke a TEAM rule at Oregon. He is no longer on the Oregon TEAM. He's been held accountable in criminal court and to the Oregon coaching staff. I broke a company rule when I started dating and married another accountant at my firm. The company let me go and I found a job at another accounting firm. My punishment was no longer being able to work for that firm just as Masoli is no longer able to play at Oregon.
I understand what you are saying, you have the right to work, earn a living, and better yourself. That IMO is a God given right, a requirement if you will. I'm not saying Masoli doesn't deserve a second chance, of course he does, and I hope he gets it and does well. But I believe Playing football is a privilege, not a right. Just because he's square with the court system, doesn't mean he should be able to run to Ol Miss, squeeze through a loop hole and never miss a beat. I think it just sets a bad precedent. Example, when you were in grade school, if you got in trouble (never happened to me, promise) and got you hide tanned, you knew, at least I did, when you got home you were going to get it again. I was square with the school....but not with the HOUSE.

With the amount of flack the NCAA got nationally for this ruling, this doesn't surprise me. As has been stated by others, they're probably adding amendments to the rule as we speak.

Regarding his actions that got him kicked off Oregon's team, I'm not one to judge. I'm hoping the kid finds himself a nice Southern Belle and gets his life turned around. I think that stone throwing and fun poking that some of us adults do about these kids is short-sighted and mean spirited. Regardless of what team they play for, maybe if there was more encouragement and steering in the right direction of the wayward ones, our society wouldn't be filled with so many malcontents. I wish the young man all the success in the world except against Alabama. RTR

WHAT? he broke the LAW!!!!! that should apply to any university! breaking a corporate rule and several laws at differing times are two very seperate issues. I hope and pray the university of Alabama NEVER accepts an individual of this moral character!!

The NCAA did the right thing for the wrong reason, now they are doing the wrong thing for the right reason?

Regardless of the decision, my only question is this...will Masoli stay enrolled and get his degree at Ole Miss after football season is over? If he does, then this may work out to be the correct decision. If I was a betting man (and I am not), I would bet Masoli never steps into a 2nd semester class at Ole Miss. He will be headed to the NFL. Then what??? How are you going to explain this one Ole Miss, Nutt and the NCAA?

My personal opinion was he got his 2nd chance at Oregon and blew that one. I told my son this afternoon that I would not be surprised if he is still around when the Rebels come to T-Town. I hope for his sake he is, but it would not surprise me if he screws up again before then.

I'm on record saying that we shouldn't be so quick to judge the guy based on a lot of reading I have done about his "offenses." I don;t necessarily agree with Ole MIss accepting him, though I understand why they did. I do think that given precedent the NCAA was correct to reverse the prior ruling and to allow him to play immediately.

This is not a moral issue. He was convicted of a crime. He served the punishment laid out by the court (or is in the process of doing so). Why should he suffer additional consequences? I think the earlier question about a guy who got fired from his job for breaking the law being able to get a new job is right on point. Whether or not I agree with the judgment of the new employer, he ought to get to work for them if they are willing to hire him.

He already has his degree from Oregon...

Ole Miss is still the 4th best team in the SEC West with Masoli, 5th best without Masoli. Doesn't really affect their standings in the conference, imo.

If Masoli is the kind of "character" they want on their team, then they better be prepare to take the jokes that come with it.

geez man why is everyone so quick to judge and put the kid down??? man he made some mistakes and hopefully he is working on bettering himself as a human being. i cant stand when grown men (or women) randomly bash a kid with zero knowledge of the kid or his character first hand. no none on here knows the circumstances which led him to make some very poor choices but geez cut him some slack. blast at way at me if you feel the need but it gets old seeing people continually bash teenage kids for wrong doing especially when most would not be singing the same tune if the kid played for bama. i know some of these are just jokes IMO there is little room for it.

as for him being cleared, good for him it was the right decision by the NCAA regardless. i still say it is a dumb rule but the ncaa created it so they have to abide by it. should be fun to watch for sure!
When a public figure, such as Masoli, steps outside the law, he's fair game for jokes and/or criticism. I think the majority of Bama fans would want such a player dismissed if he exhibited the character deficit we've seen from Masoli. Besides, most of the jokes and criticism have been posted since the announcement that he would enroll and play at Ole Miss. Would you want Coach Saban recruiting a high school player with an identical rap sheet? You'd likely be like most folks, upset that Bama would recruit a player with multiple convictions.

A lot of people are saying he deserves a second chance. He had a second chance at Oregon. He blew it just like he blew his first chance. Now, he's getting a third chance. How many times should he be allowed to skate before his privilege of playing college football is revoked? Think it's unfair to take away that privilege? Convicted felons lose the right to vote or to possess firearms. The message Masoli is getting is "do what you want, there are no consequences." Want to lay odds on how long it'll be before he's in trouble again? I figure it won't be long. He's already learned that no matter what he does, he doesn't have to be accountable for it.

I hope Ole Miss loses every game. Nutt and Masoli deserve it.

You think you could get accepted to grad school if you applied on August 13 at Ole Miss and were not a football player. I wonder who will sue ole miss for getting declined admission to post grad studies? I dont have a dog in this hunt but it sounds like something Oilbama do. LOL
Let me double-check what I posted: "Personally, and from a pure football perspective, I'm looking forward to watching him play."

(a) Nothing there about the grad school admissions process (or lack thereof) @ UM; I'm Sgt. Schultz from Hogan's Heroes on that. ;)
(b) Note the underlined part above: "from a pure football perspective"
(c) Regarding your question about getting accepted into graduate school, yes, actually, I do think so, if I had begun the process informally prior to 8/13/10. Happens quite often, actually. Now, I haven't a clue as to whether JM did start the app process early or not. (Again, my point here is not about Ole Miss' grad school in particular; it's a gen'l comment. All I know about UM's grad school admissions is that it's very, very difficult to get into Pharmacy School there. Apparently doing so involves knowledge of science & stuff...:p )

My gen'l thoughts are unchanged. I've only seen snippets of this guy on ESPN because, well, I'm too old to stay up late enough to watch PAC 10 games. Plus, I pretty much don't care about the PAC 10 at all. But I've seen some fun clips of Masoli. Now maybe I'll get to see much more of his football skills. Perhaps even in person.

Peace to all, and a great big Roll Tide!

The future is certainly bright for the parks and recreation outlook in the state of Mississippi. When this young man receives his masters degree, he will undoubtedly turn Mississippi into the green spaces and clean port-o-potties capital of the South.

I feel your pain, brother. Plus, to add insult to injury, I have to get up at 1:30 to be awake for the 2 am kick-off to listen online and still be at work at 7:00. Luckily it's the last week of Ramadan and no body will notice if I'm alittle late. :BigA:
