New Bama Kicker

I don't know if this breaks a rule and if it does I'm sure it'll be deleted and that's fine. I work for a company in Bessemer, Alabama and my supervisors son (the owner's grandson) has been trying to kick for Bama. He was called for his second tryout yesterday and he went for his physical this morning and got his equipment. I've been around the kid for about 4 years now and he's one of the most respectful and hard-working kids you'll find. His name is Kolby Taylor. Look out for him. Might just take Tiffin's place when he leaves. Meanwhile, he'll probably get to suit up for the first time Saturday. So proud of this kid.

I'm sure Cade Foster will have something to say about that :p

Not sure of his stats. He played at Oak Grove. VERY good athlete and a very good kicker. As for Cade Foster, I'm not sure who he is or anything, but I know Kolby was asked to put the ball inside the 5 yardline on kickoffs and he did just that and the coaches were impressed. He now has a number. #45 His dad just told me that. We'll see what happens.

I don't mean to be obtuse, but good high school kickers routinely put the ball into the end zone on kickoff's. Kicking from the 40 and with higher-than-college tees make this very routine. And great high school kickers routinely kick the ball off out of the end zone.

Not to say this guy doesn't have potential (I've never seen him kick) and his leg strength will improve with proper coaching and conditioning, but your top-rated D1-A kicking prospects kick the ball out of the end zone on pretty much every kick off.

Well, while waiting to kick for the coaches yesterday, he got to watch practice. Tiffin put it at the 5 and 3 consistently. The backup put it at the 10 almost every time. Kolby put it inside the 5 4 of 5 times. I mean, the kid just called and said he has a jersey with his name on it and the #45. Will he be there for a while? I don't know. But he impressed the ST coach and the kicking coach, so I'm impressed. The opportunity is there. It's for him to capitalize on it. We will see what happens. I do know that, at his first tryout, he punted the ball 70 yards and I think that may have gotten his name in the coaches rolodex.

If the coaching staff is happy with him, so am I. I'll keep an eye out for him. Every team should have a capable back-up kicker, but few actually do...

Hello, my name is Cade Foster. I enjoy funghi porcini-filled crepes, long walks on the beach, and hurting the poor guy silly enough to return my kickoff.

I apologize. I made a mistake. I thought you were saying his kickoff's were going to the five in high school.

Best of luck to him. Lord knows we'll need someone good to replace Leigh Tiffin.

No, he was putting it out of the end zone in HS. He also played QB, RB, CB at OG. Probably the best athlete that school has seen. I remember a game he threw a TD, ran a TD, ran a KO back for TD, was perfect on PAT's and hit a 50-yard FG in the same game. May have even caught one too. He won Fox6 player of the week that week. Got him a helmet.

I love to hear stories like this for several reasons...

First, great for the kid to be persistent enough to stick with a dream to see it come true.

Second, I love the fact that we're 10 games into the season, playing GREAT football and Saban and his staff are STILL looking for every possible opportunity to improve.

Good point. It shows how hard these coaches are working to make this team the best it can be. 3 great classes in a row......:cheers2:

Kolby's dad tried to get him to go to Shelton and then to Bama. Told him he'd be the one paying the student loans after he got out of school and the loans he'd have to have to go to Shelton would be much less than at Bama. Kolby said his dream was to go to Bama and he wanted to play football. After his first tryout, the coaches gave him a workout schedule and told him to stay sharp and the kid freakin did it. Everytime I've talked to him, he's always saying "sir" to me. I'm only 30. He is a great kid, all A's all of his life in school and he's getting what he deserves right now.
