Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

But this isn't any assistant's job. This is ALABAMA! ;)

Also, the last HC for the Arizona Cardinals to end up at Bama worked out okay . . .

Seriously, though, Locksley going to FAU is surprising to me. Hopefully it's not a surprise for Coach Saban.
Nothing surprises him. If this was Coach Saban's OC choice he would have told him and Locksley would not have left IMO. Good move for Locksley to get back on the field.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Freddie has overcome a lot in his life time. I have a ton of respect for him.
That is a name I figured would come up. Just wonder why he hasn't gotten the chance to make the move to the next level. He has been coaching tight ends and QBs in the pros for 10 years now.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Up here in the DC area, where Locks is from, he is not highly regarded as an offensive mind. The Terp fans were very glad to see him go..and that program is not in the same universe as Bama. There was talk of him accepting a lesser assistant role, so his recruiting skills could be retained.( Locks is a very good recruiter.)..but.not much of an OC. At least that is the prevailing view from up here.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

If some one on this site that is well connected could pass it on to Coach Saban, my choices for the new OC are:
1. Sarkisian (barring any bad stuff happening with him).
2. Locksley
3. Napier

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

What about that guy who coached Mitch Mistain in high school? I forget his name, but it sounds like an Italian sandwich.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

it has been weird I have not heard any names thrown out by anyone at all. The only names I keep hearing are thrown out by fans. Even the people in the know on here have just told us who it might not be.

It probably makes a difference having 4 and 5 star recruits to work with. Maryland has probably never had 2-4 star athleters on the same team, much less 2 on offense.

His 2007 and 2008 Illinois offenses were good. Two of the only times he had a few talented guys on the team. Probably the closest thing to what he would have at Alabama.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Again this morning I heard the name Lincoln Riley thrown around. I can't see it happening (lateral move to an "equivalent job") but the person that said it is fairly well plugged in. Anyone hear this recently?

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Lincoln Riley doesn't seem like the kind of hire Saban has made: he's hired an up-and-comer (Applewhite), an assistant of a coaching friend at a G5 conference school (McElwain), a coaching friend of the former OC (Nussmeier), and a fired HC who came on as an analyst shortly before the opening (Kiffin).

Riley doesn't need saving like Kiffin. I don't think he's got many connections to Saban. I don't see how a move from OU to UA makes sense unless he's got baggage. I think everyone would prefer a guy with less baggage.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

I have no knowledge of who it might be to replace Kiffin but just going from past coach Saban's hires I would look out west. Applewhite, McElwain, Nussmeier, Kiffin all from the west and all except Applewhite from far west.

Maybe he hires offensive coordinators from conferences, areas that most SEC schools don't schedule or see very often for a reason. Just a thought. ;)

All good points.

But, maybe CNS wants to break the cycle of "helping" talented folks out.

And maybe LR might be attracted to another shade of Crimson because he sees a Ring SOONER in the future here than there?

This is a good point and something worth considering as a guide for attempting to make a likely more accurate candidates list.

I just don't see the point for Riley. He's going to have a 5th year QB (3rd year starter) next year...I think he'll stay with what he knows anticipating that 2016 was the down year and 2017 is the contention year for OU.

Kind of looks like Saban doesn't have a type, to me at least. In which case, Riley is as good a bet as any. But I think you're right that he's just not likely to come here even if we pursue -- he's either in or near the top level coordinator hiring pool already, no real need for whatever boost the Saban pedigree would give him.
