Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

I think Saban values the new or outsider type voice on offense to keep things fresh. This is partly why I think Kiffin got the hire despite it seeming like a toxic decision at the time.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

What about that guy who coached Mitch Mistain in high school? I forget his name, but it sounds like an Italian sandwich.
Not sure if you forgot the blue font, but pretty sure Mustain's high school coach was Gus Malzahn.
Yeah, and that doesn't sound like any Hoagie I've ever heard of...

Oh, wait a minute - must mean Mustain and the Southern Cal Zone Read Option...Calzone = Malzahn! Ah-ha!

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Lincoln Riley doesn't seem like the kind of hire Saban has made: he's hired an up-and-comer (Applewhite), an assistant of a coaching friend at a G5 conference school (McElwain), a coaching friend of the former OC (Nussmeier), and a fired HC who came on as an analyst shortly before the opening (Kiffin).

Riley doesn't need saving like Kiffin. I don't think he's got many connections to Saban. I don't see how a move from OU to UA makes sense unless he's got baggage. I think everyone would prefer a guy with less baggage.
You never know what you might hear over a chicken biscuit!

It seems like a strange move for him to me too. I asked where the fella heard it when he said "short list" and "strong interest". He said he heard it the same place he always hears things. I hope he's right because that fella is a good OC, but I have strong doubts about this one.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

From what I understand, any OC that has come in and will come in the future are still using Saban's playbook, correct? These OCs add to his playbook, like McElwain adding the pistol, etc. So, the next OC will have to be comfortable in A) operating out of Saban's playbook and B) integrating their twist/influence within Saban's playbook. Obviously, the mods can shoot this idea down if I'm totally wrong.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

3 or fewer NFL coaching wins, 2016-2017 season, as of 12.16.2016:

John Fox - 3
Gus Bradley - 2
Chip Kelly - 1
Hue Jackson - 0
Isaiah 63:1 - 0

I'm not significantly worse than Chip Kelly...
Probably not the best barometer to use. Pete Carroll was not a great HC in the NFL before doing extremely well at USC and now Seattle. CNS wasn't doing too great at Miami before he came back to Alabama.

Yes, but Saban did very well at LSU.

Uh............if it were really Italian, you would call it a "sangawich".

But, a calzone is not a sangawich. Or a sammich.

That is basically buying the propaganda about Miami. You have to look at facts at Miami and what he had to deal with. Given time, and the control he'd been promised, he would have been successful...

IIRC he was blocked when he wanted to sign Brees, who wound up going to NO in what many consider to be one of the greatest free agent pickups in history.

If Miami had just let Saban sign the QB he wanted (some guy destined for obscurity name Drew Brees), we might still be struggling to find the right coach.

WVUA in Tusacloosa reporting Saban told the team during the team meeting that Sark is the man. No one else reporting it yet, though.

Great stuff Cuda.

I did my studies in Toronto, which has an Italian population exceeded only by 6 cities in the old country.

And yeah, for them, it was all about going out and getting a "veal sangwich"...
