Just for the record, I checked the Covid cases among people between 10 and 29 in Virginia. 27, 757 cases, 6 deaths. (0.02%). No data on how many had damaged lungs, damaged heart, etc. For "normal" people, (i.e. not intercollegiate athletes), I doubt they'd check too closely.
That’s kinda the rub though...these guys are elite athletes so little degradations to their body’s performance can be substantial. So many unknowns. As much as I want to see ball this Fall, you aren’t going to catch me being a ride or die guy for it.

Now that students have been back in town I've seen a lot wearing masks....but I've also seen a crap ton not wearing them. Now that the bars are shutting down early they are going to be pre-gaming at the bars before going to the house parties. It's going to spread and it's going to spread bad.

A friend of mine who is a history buff, especially military history, said of young men and risk assessment, "There is a reason we want it to be young men who hit the beach when the ramp goes down. If a landing craft was full of 40-somethings, when the ramp went down, they would all say, 'Hang on a minute. You want me to go up there!?! I don't think that's a good idea.'"

whether they play or not, is there some reason the players can't live inside the football program bubble regardless of what happens with the season?

I disagree with Saban and Lawrence, I understand what they are saying but, I disagree.

It is not safe to play a sport where sweaty kids are slamming into each other for hours. It’s crazy to think you can do that safely right now. Not all these athletes are “healthy”. Lineman, who are basically required to be overweight, are not healthy. Fat puts more stress on your heart and lungs, 2 things this virus attacks. We shouldn’t be asking these kids to sacrifice their safety for our entertainment. Same goes for high school sports, it’s just stupid that HS sports are pushing forward in most areas. It’s going to be a disaster but, hey, at least we’ll have fun!

this type of thing goes for pretty much our whole country right now. lots of folks are assuming that what they are doing/want to do is o.k.

I agree with coach. It’s not “is it safe to play football”. It’s “is it safe to have all the students on campus attending class and living in dorms together”. That’s where the virus will spread. If they’re gonna be in that environment (and I haven’t heard of any major schools canceling the fall semester) then the question becomes, “are football players safer getting tested twice per week and having the best medical care money can buy, or being left to their own devices on campus”.

I totally agree with your conclusions. I believe that those responsible for making the decision are receiving the most up to date medical advice available and are attempting to weigh that against all of the financial and other considerations involved in the decision. Most of us are not well enough informed to advocate one way or another.

“are football players safer getting tested twice per week and having the best medical care money can buy, or being left to their own devices on campus”.
An incredible waste of tests for the sake of a few. And, this morning I read that out-of-state students who test positive will NOT count towards Tuscaloosa totals, but be assigned to their home state/county EVEN IF they were negative when they arrive on campus.

Shut. It. Down.

Boy, that does not sound right from a statistics point of view.
If I am from Orange County, New Jersey, show up at Alabama's campus negative and two weeks later I am positive, I do not see how my illness can be included on Orange County's covid infection numbers. If I was not tested and came down with Covid a week after arrival in Tuscaloosa, that is debatable, but after two weeks on campus, I think my illness has to get listed on Tuscaloosa County's totals.
The procedure you described is a recipe for statistical confusion and resulting in bad policy.

Going out on a limb here but if the season isn't played it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Saban hangs it up. The setback and financial fallout from not having a football season could sway him to "take it to the lake". Just my opinion.
This is an opinion I really hate to agree with.
But the possibility is very real.
I hate it.

I'm working my way through the 2009 season on Youtube. In the USCe game, Mark Ingram just put the team on his back in the 4th quarter and carried the team to victory). I'm up to the Tennessee game.
The 2009 Tennessee team was the best Volunteer team Alabama has face in the last decade.
Against LSU, GMac missed a wide open Julio for a TD in the 2nd quarter.
CBS pointed out that at that point of the season, Alabama was the worst red zone passing offensive in Division 1A.
GMac had leadership and intangibles, but man did he have a midseason slump in 2009.
I commend on Julio keeping what was surely a huge amount of frustration under his hat.
If you want to appreciate Tua's QB play, go back and watch GMac in mid-season 2009. Wow.

Yeah, but my point was not that no Covid patients end up with myocarditis, just that the data on how many Covid patients end up presenting myocarditis is an unknown. Is it 10%? 50%? 0.00001% We probably don't know because if I got Covid and survived, they would probably send me home and tell me to come back in three-six months to see if I had long-term damage to lungs or heart.
Maybe we do know how pervasive long-term heart or lung damage is. I don't.
