Teachers Fired for Reporting Abuse, Lawsuit Claims

Two teachers, including a former teacher of the year, are suing the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami, claiming they were fired for reporting suspected sex abuse involving the principal and a seventh grade girl.

Chanell Morello and Lynn Hoffman immediately contacted the Florida Department of Children and Families and the Miami Archdiocese after the student made Morello aware of an incident allegedly involving St. Anthony Catholic School principal Norma Kramer.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

This whole situation is disgusting. The bottom line is that Joe Paterno should have done more to stop it. He made his choice and now he has to live with his decision to do nothing about it.

Earlier, someone stated that this is a sad way to end a career. In my opinion. it was a sad way to run a career!

If he is right (I know he has been dubious in the past), this situation is about to explode. I mean he is talking about a new major allegation that "will horrify the public". I hope he is nothing more then stirring the pot, but he isn't, it's about to get uglier at Penn State.

Based on his next tweet . . .

"This is a deadly serious matter. Keep the victims in your thoughts. Cannot emphasize that enough. In your thoughts."

. . . I've got to assume that, over the past 15 years, some of his victims have killed themselves.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

This is very sad. IMO this is what happens when a man is coaching far beyond his prime and beyond his competancy to do so. IMO the allegations McQueary brought to him, JoePa did not take serious enough. It is hard to believe he would not have been aware of the allegations against Sandusky back in 1998 when the detective questioned Sandusky about showering with young boys and where Sandusky said he would not shower with boys again. I think the board did the right thing. Unfortunately, they did this way too late. They should have done this several years ago when the signs were all there that Joe really wasn't coaching. Instead, he was just being a figurehead. The figurehead didn't deal with the allegations in a strong enough manner and it cost him and the school.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

What I don't understand is Mike McQueary actions. If he saw such a horrendous act, and told CJP about it, and then sees that PSU is covering it up, why not go to the police. If Mike McQueary feels that he has no physical proof and the kid won't talk, thus becoming his word vs Sandusky's, why did he stay at PSU? Why did PSU work so hard to keep Sandusky's reputation clean? Are there more skeletons in the PSU closet and Sandusky's knows about them all?

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

The trustees decided to do the right thing regardless of the consequences. If Paterno and others at PSU had done that when they had the chance, we wouldn't be witnessing this now. Instead, they put the program and their own careers and legacies over the safety and welfare of children, and this monster apparently continued to rape boys for years. Its the saddest and most tragic story in sports that I can remember, but I applaud the trustees' decision.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

There were a lot of posters on here back when PSU came to town last year, writing about how much they liked and respected Paterno; I wasn't, and didn't (and now justifiably don't) respect him because of the fact there were never any NCAA investigations into a program that wasn't even remotely clean (if there were, they were "barned" because they were never sanctioned). Now he doesn't report sexual abuse to the police. I ain't sayin' I told you so...although I was taught to respect my elders, I was not expected to respect the Paternos or Madoffs of the world. They prove by their actions (or inactions) what they deserve, and it ain't respect, IMO.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

two local rumors from some sports journalists:

1) McQueary will not be fired. Rumor is that he did go to the police at some point about victim #2 but they did nothing. Since he reported it he falls under a whistle blower defense where you can't lose your job for reporting what he saw just because his superiors and authorities did nothing

2) There will soon be a few new allegations that comes through taking all of this to the next level...one involving the Second Mile program, the other involving victim #2

and this is all expected to break before saturday's game with Nebraska.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

The best comment I've seen is from former Penn State LB Paul Posluzsny, now with Jacksonville:

"There is not a worse crime that can happen, and it happened at our school, on our campus. Obviously, everyone involved, everyone that has the Penn State name, is extremely upset. We were known for a university that tried to do things the right way and obviously that was not the case. We had the opportunity to be right, to solve a problem, to fix something, and we didn't. And that hurts, that really hurts because all the talk of doing things the right way all the time, we didn't live up to that. So that really hurts."

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

yeah, the worst is yet to come...

anyway, still some idiots out there like the Steelers' punter. what the heck does keeping players out of games for missing class have to do with Joe's participation in a child sex scandal? some people just don't know when to shut their meaningless mouths

But, like I’ve said, I stand behind Coach Paterno. He’s a guy who has kept players out of games for missing class, so for people to think that he did anything in terms of covering this up, I don’t necessarily think that’s his M.O. — Pittsburgh Steelers and former Penn State punter Jeremy Kapinos

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

The PSU riots are sickening...

Just goes to show you the ignorance of youth and the mentality that age group possesses. If things don't go their way, let's get violent and idiotic about it. If you want to protest, do it in a respectful manner. I say the police should've rubber-bulletted and pepper sprayed every last one of them into submission.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

or they just really like/love the man. He has been there practically forever. It would probably be equivalent to what would have happened if something like this had come out close to the end of Bryant's tenure, with Alabama firing him after all that he did for the school. I understand that what he did was wrong, but a lot of people grew up watching him on the sidelines, and they can't...or won't accept that he was fired like this.

I am one of those

or I should say was

I grew up on Penn State football

I was born in PA, lived there till I was 12

My Dad Graduated PSU 1964

I was one of the few college football fans in my group of cousins. When I was around my Uncle's it was all about PSU/JoPa. My favorite Uncle Bob lived for PSU. The day I decided to stay in the South and go to Bama rather than go back North to Penn State my Mom's first comment was "Call your Uncle Bob and tell him yourself". Every time I saw Bob since I caught hell over it. This kept up for over 20 years until earlier this year when Bob passed away. One of the last things he and I talked about when I visited him in the Nursing home last year was how they were going to kill us this year and how he couldn't believe JoePa was going to be at PSU long after Bob himself passed away. I hate that Bob passed, he was a hell of a guy, but I am glad he didn't get to see the real JoPa. And I am really sorry that I had to learn who the real JoPa is.

I can understand what those people are going through. I spoke to my dad early yesterday about this and he was upset about "how they were treating Paterno" A lot has come out since then so I don't know his opinion now. I really don't want to call him. Dad started PSU in 1959 Paterno is all he ever knew

If that's the case, he won't be fired until the new permanent head coach is hired - and it won't be anyone on the current staff.

At that time, law not withstanding, he will be fired and he will never work in college (probably any level) sports again.

When a grown man (and recent college athlete) walks in on a child being raped, you don't run and call daddy, you don't tell coach the next day, you don't even immediately call the cops. You react with immediate, extreme violence.

He failed as a human being at a very minimum it will cost him his career.
