KM should absolutely enter his name in the draft. Are the A’s saying they’ll pull his contract if he does? I haven’t heard that. They took a risk selecting him in the first place. They knew this could happen. Say he gets drafted late in the first round ...he does not have to sign with the team that selects him and he could go play baseball. Say he gets a top 5 pick and a 50 million guaranteed contract regardless of the fact that you ever take a snap....he still making the wrong call?

This is a weak ILB class. Mack will benefit from it.

Maybe but that Rank overall is WIDE. DEVIN AT 6 and Mack in the 50’s could easily spell a slide into round 2. It’s all about team needs too. Guess he’ll find out soon enough. Best of luck to him and all the guys though.

Depends where he is drafted. This year's "Clevleand" just hired a guy who just might be goofy enough to pick him first.

In which case..............

He could be the next JaMarcus Russell, and be set for life.
It’s my understanding JR has already squandered most of his.

Certain skills in baseball are locks - speed, a strong arm and good glove will take you far. I don’t think Otis Nixon has KM’s arm, and he batted .270 with many of those hits infield (back then I watched the Braves a lot). He played 16 years.
I get what everyone is saying; he might get money quicker in the NFL. He has to be 100% committed whichever way he goes, and I’m not sure he will ever be that committed, especially when times get tough. I just think (having never seen him play baseball) he’ll have a better future in baseball. The A’s obviously have seen him play.

That was a different time in baseball. The guy with speed who can leg-out a hit is no longer valued like they were. You don’t have Vince Colemans,Brett Butlers or Otis Nixons anymore. Everyone has to have some level of power. I have no idea if KM fits that mold or not.

He does. He’s been compared to Mookie Betts and Andrew McCutchen. For non baseball folks that’s pretty good company to be compared with. I honestly think he just really does like fball more. I hope it works out for him. He’s exciting to watch.

My limited view of his parents at this point make me think that the apple fell close to the tree. It’s all about Kyler and how much attention he can get.

People were saying how “humble” he is. His declaration was just a low level single sentence. No press conference, etc. but look how much attention it got. It’s a well orchestrated money grab.

His Dad looks like he’s always angry and Mom looks totally checked out of the process. Lush vibe is big with her. It’s their version of his own reality show

He will see where he’s drafted and by whom. If he likes the situation he will play football. If he doesn’t he will play baseball for a year and try it again.

I'm almost certain JR wasted every bit of the money he made.

But if he doesn't report in time I imagine the A's have something in writing to where KM has to give up the money he made. I think his report date to the A's coincides with the NFL Combine. The A's surely have backups in their contract that protected them after letting him play football this year. If not, they are the dumbest MLB team on the planet and the GM deserves to be fired. KM won't lose his contract but he's going to lose a lot of that signing bonus if he doesn't report to the A's and you can beat they can go after him and the money if he doesn't show up..

I think some are stretching it with Mookie Betts as he is one gifted hitter that doesn't come along that often. McCutchen would be a better comparison and I'm not even sure he has the power McCutchen once had. KM would be better off in baseball though, if his bat does truly come along (he hasn't played in a while) and with his speed he would be pretty valuable to the A's.

If he believes himself to be a can't miss MLB prospect, then MLB is the way to go. He would likely have a 10-15 year career and earn $100MM, minimum.

If he goes through the draft and is selected in the top 5 he would earn about $30MM at signing, with more than $20MM guaranteed. If he gets a second contract, he would be in MLB earnings territory. His second contract would put his earnings in the $100MM range.

But here's the thing - there is no such thing as a can't miss prospect in MLB or the NFL. Getting to your second contract is the key in both sports, no matter where you are drafted.

If I were told to choose between a guaranteed $5MM contract and a guaranteed $20MM contract, the choice would be easy. While both offer opportunity for tremendous future earnings, only one offers a lifetime's earnings up front. Assuming similar interests in the two sports, the NFL is the easy answer. MLB can make it harder - offer him something like $15MM guaranteed - but they chose not to do so (which is why he is entering in the draft).

Riddle me this - If he is really that much of a can't miss prospect, why wouldn't the A's pay him $15MM right now to settle this?

Because nobody is a can't miss prospect.

If I'm the A's I pull the contract, get all the money back that I can and just move on. He will be a distraction for any franchise, maybe even two franchises if he gets his way.

Uh.................maybe because no one is "can't miss", and they are notoriously cheap.

If Daddy Murray and Scott Boras think they can win a game of chicken, with Billy Boy................well, I will be totally shocked if he blinks.

No, just because he has a strong arm, is really fast, and can probably hit well enough, is not a reason to cough up that kind of money, to an unproven talent. Not only is Billy Boy cheap, he doesn't like to listen to anyone's opinion about anything. (Don't ask how I know this.) I can see trouble brewing, if KM does go there, and his dad pulls his usual stunt of making demands.

O/T diversion time....................

BTW, the movie "Moneyball" is BS. Based on a book, that itself is largely BS. The funny thing is the folks who did the movie liked the story, but not well enough to hire the guy who wrote it to help with the movie. So, add him to the list of folks who are upset about it. Never saw it, so I can not comment on exactly how far from the truth it actually is. Let's just say Hollywood wrote a story and turned it into a movie. </rant>

That's really what I think it is. IIRC he has let that be known multiple times. And frankly, I can't blame him. Football is the far superior sport. But obviously has much greater injury risks.

Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
For what it's worth. I recently saw something from Deion Sander's who tweeted to Murray to choose baseball and "don't look back". I find that interesting from someone who loved football more than baseball (as Murray supposedly does) and now that both his career's are over has the ability to look back. I maybe wrong and reading into something that's not there. But it sounds like Deion maybe saying "If I had it to do over again, I would have chosen baseball and not looked back." Just speculating.

No idea if he would actually make that choice given the option but I'm sure in hindsight he sees the appeal of playing a less physical sport.

Remember, when Deion needed to make a tackle, he didn't. Deion Sanders never laid wood on anyone - ever. Dude was terrified of contact. Yeah, makes sense that he would tell someone not to play the sport. He was afraid of the sport.

Or he may be weighing what it would be like to be a starting quarterback - and face of a franchise - in the NFL (arguably the most highly regarded position in all of sports) vs. work his way through the Oakland A's farm system...

While his odds of succeeding in the MLB long-term may be marginally higher, the guaranteed money for a first round QB should be way higher than the first contract for an MLB draft pick. Not sure why so many are questioning the logic?

Seems a little presumptive... Do you judge Jalen's maturity/humbleness based on things his parents said or did early in the season?

He's a 21 year old with limited leverage looking for his best opportunity across two sports. Give him a break. Seems like a good kid, and should be fun to watch in either league he chooses to play in.
