QB Competition 2018

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

The OL can get frustrated when they have perfect blocks, but the ball doesn't go to where the hole is. I have seen several plays this year where the hole is there for the ball to go to the RB but Jalen keeps it.
I get why there would be frustrating, I even get why some would start to lose faith. But nothing cited would justify losing the entire locker room. That leaves either something else or it hasn't happened. That's how I see it at least.

Alabama didn't lose faith in JPW, they went all the way to the SECCG with him. I stood up for the guy, he worked hard, but he didn't exactly play mistake free games. So, unless there's some real serious behind the scenes friction that has been allowed to escalate (it shouldn't) this shouldn't be a loss of the locker room situation. It understandably is and should be a situation that should have already been addressed though. I just see more middle room, if you turn on a guy under these circumstances, that's your bad to, not just his.

Hurts has been one of the main reasons we have had the success we've had this year. I think we all understand that we would have had more than one loss if Tua was playing. No knack on Tua but he still hasn't made it up to game speed against the 1s yet. Jalen just had a bad game against the Barn, but so did the rest of the team honestly. (Keep in mind, it was his passing that got us the win against MSU two games before). Jalen is still progressing as well so I truly believe he'll make even more strides in the off-season to be a complete QB. The same as Tua. Both will be quality careers at QBs for Bama, I'm personally just enjoying the experience folks.

How’s that? I DEFINITELY do not concede that we’d have more than one loss if Tua were QB

I'll admit that I'm a full time eeyore but I think you're underestimating what the long term effects could be here.
Are they going to take away the 4 rings that Saban has brought Alabama? Even if you never get another with him as your head coach, he has earned the right to mess up.

That gets to the issue of if these guys are really ready to turn, then those guys are actually part of the problem.

If you have two talented receivers, get both of them in the game. if you have two talented linebackers, get both of them in the game. If you have two talented QBs, play both of them.

So each offensive position group has reason to be frustrated, but you don't see how that can cause problems in the locker room?

And this idea that some have that we've continued to win so must mean things are going well is just wrong. On paper, we beat about 10 of the teams on our schedule.

I said I can't see how that can cause the locker room to be lost. If a guy who throws just about as many interceptions as touchdowns can keep a locker room, if Hurts could keep the locker room last year, I do not see the logic in his losing (not starting to lose, big difference) the locker room this year.

Are we now saying that if any quarterback struggles and loses a few games he should lose the locker room? GMac lost 3 games, came back and dominated in the final game. I am simply saying if the locker room itself has been lost, there's would have to be some massive festering issue we're not being told about. You don't just say screw it because things aren't going how you like... that's not how anyone wins football games. Basically though, it can't all be Hurts is what I'm saying, unless he is a locker room cancer. But without someone going around talking crap about Hurts, I simply don't see whole the whole he's a good leader thing has just been a lie and secretly everyone hates him.

Winning masks a ton - there could have been major issues building all year, and the loss just brought it all to a head. Of course I am just speculating because I have no direct knowledge of locker room issues.

That's possible, but it begs the question of not addressing said issues earlier. You don't let it come to that. More importantly, you don't want guys on your team that are going to turn on you after a loss, or even after a few bad games. Those are bad teammates. The whole issue with Hurts is he doesn't seem to placing enough confidence in those around him, if they aren't willing to do the same, then what do they have to complain about? Then it's just mutual distrust and both parties are to blame.

The whole losing a locker room narrative opens a broader issue, which would be if someone is going around bad mouthing Hurts, he might not want to give them the ball... I just don't think things have actually gotten that petty.

No idea what might or might not be happening, but you are supposing a lot here. There can be dissension without name calling. Most locker room stuff is a slow simmer, not a rolling boil.

What I'm actually assuming is that these guys are level headed and trust their coaches. I don't think it would get as bad as some have framed it without a true locker room cancer.

Wow, this thread has really taken a turn for the worse. Jalen has lost the team. The players are frustrated and aren't trying anymore. Coach Saban doesn't know what to do or won't do what's best for the team. Sorry, guys, but I think that's a load of crap.

We lost one game where Coach Daboll made some questionable calls and Jalen played poorly. So? That's one game. I predict we'll see a much different performance from the Tide the next time they take the field. And if the play calling continues to be so questionable, we'll see a new OC. And if the QB play does not improve, we'll see a new QB. But everyone should keep in mind that Coach Saban is not Mike BuBose. This is not his first rodeo and he knows how to run a program.

The sky is not falling. In fact, there's a good chance we'll be in the playoffs. And if we play to our abilities, we could very well win another championship. I'm not giving up on Jalen or Coach Saban or even Coach Daboll at this point.

I'm sure some playmakers are unhappy because of the lack of touches. I really don't see how this could be a problem with the entire locker room, or how Hurts could lose the confidence of the locker room (unless there is just a ton of behind the scenes stuff we're all unaware of). I mean unless Hurts is just the biggest jerk there is, it is hard to imagine him finding a way to get the team to turn on him. A couple RBs and WRs? Sure, but what would anyone else have against him? The whole story thus far has been his leadership and calm, unless that narrative has been false, or there's some locker room cancer, he shouldn't have lost the locker room. Remember, he has the second best winning percentage of any Saban quarterback, so it isn't as though the team is going to turn on him because he hasn't won enough games.

I just can't imagine that being a real possibility. One reason I wanted more short stuff, and kept calling for that, was because I thought the touches would help keep more play makers involved. It is completely understandable that they have some frustration. The question would be more are some starting to lose faith or have they lost faith? If they have lost faith, if the problem has been this bad for this long that they started losing faith a while ago and just lost faith now... there's just no reason it should have been allowed to come to that. That's why I have trouble believing it has, unless of course the locker room issue isn't really Jalen at all.

Dude... are you actually listening to Earle? He tells you there’s indeed a problem here and you try to continually tell him (and others) “I don’t think it’s that significant” and “Jalen can’t be the cause” of it. I can’t tell whether you’re intentionally being antagonistic or if your allegiance to JH makes you totally blind to seeing that JH is the cause of some major issues (issues that can’t just be corrected by dumping blame on the staff).

It’s akin to going into the hospital with a loved one and hearing a nurse (who has been privy to everything that’s been said/done in the ER) say “this is a serious situation” ONLY to walk away saying “it can’t be as serious as what the nurse is saying” or “the problem must be in the way the medical staff is handling it.”

Listen to yourself... “I really don’t see”, “it’s hard to imagine”, “I just can’t imagine”, “there’s just no reason”, “I have trouble believing it”.

There doesn't have to be personal issues or a desire for more touches for there to be friction. I don't know if this is a problem or not, but I do know that a team can become frustrated if they feel the coaches are not playing the right players to win. It's conceivable that the team believes Tua is the answer. I know nothing about this particular situation, but this is a possible scenario. So, it wouldn't necessarily be anything personal regarding Jalen, just that they think they Tua is the better option. Having said that, even if it were true, it's probably not that clear cut.

It is a situation which is unique to his regime here, that's for sure. Never before has he let himself and the team become so QB-dependent. This is a man who's won NCs with a McElroy and a Coker. I don't think he wanted to happen. It was one of those things that happened. Last year, he didn't have a choice. You can make an argument he didn't have a choice earlier this season. Now, he has a choice....

Earle, I know you can't always give us inside info you may have, but are you able to give us your thoughts on what may transpire.

I've said about all that I can and probably more than I should. We are just at a real crossroads in our present situation. Seeing how it turns out is going to be fascinating...
