No, it's happening all over, but BAMA is a very high profile school. A lot of these guys think, hey, it's BAMA, they have lots of money to spread around. NIL seems to be the way of the world now, but I say, you want big bucks, give me big play.
Yep - this is a much larger issue at schools which attract more talented players. These players have always been harder to manage. They have been told their entire lives how great they are. They have hugely inflated egos. Even their parents are more fan than parent as they hope their child will change the financial circumstances of the entire family.

Add NIL and the portal - coaches no longer have any real leverage. Coaches now are just there for the Xs and Os.

Got to remember we lost 39 players to the portal and got only 14. The new recipe for 'winning
a Natty is to have an experienced players with an efficient QB to run the offense.
Good QB play is a must in this new era offense. Right now we have neither. When you have four and 5th year players there is a sense of urgency because it's their last go round like it was for us in 2020 when we won it. It's going take probably two seasons to get this roster fixed.

You think that’s the case only at Alabama?
No, but just because Saban is the GOAT doesn't mean he doesn't make mistakes - and he handled the NIL locker room poorly.

We don't hear of or see these issues manifesting at other schools with elite talent. Somehow Day, Smart, even Sark seem to have found better balance. Or more proactively removed cancers.

It is what it is, but DeBoer inherited a mess.

Jalen's ability to run is what makes him special as a QB, but I think I've heard him say a couple of times that he would rather throw first. Maybe that's why he won't take the running opportunities when they are there. I think if he would do that, the defense would have to respect the run and it would open up the passing game for him.
JM is even inconsistent in his comments!

One comment he seems so humble and like a team player, but then he'll turn around and say very, very arrogant things that are opposed to his humble statements.

For instance, when asked last year about running the ball, he said he didn't have "to practice" running. What I find arrogant about that statement is he actually is a very average ball carrier in traffic and especially as he moves laterally. He's been tackled by his shoe-strings so many times I've lost count.

He's also easy to tackle in the pocket. How many times has he been sacked by one arm in the pocket??? It's because he has terrible footwork and he's usually off balance.

He really only a great runner once he turns north and south and gets momentum.

So he really does need to practice his "running." He needs some of those running back reps where they pick up their feet and go thru the ropes to learn how to avoid getting tackled so easily as he moves laterally.

And to add insult to injury, because his passing game really depends on his ability to run, when he acts arrogant about his running game it also shows his arrogance about his passing game.

I've said it 100 times now, but I'll say it again. He has zero "self-awareness" about his true abilities and weaknesses. He doesn't understand his main passing strength is because of his ability to run, but he often refuses to run even though it's what opens up his ability to be a better passer.

Makes me want to bang my head against a wall and just another reason I'm ready for the JM experiment to end!

Saban literally said every player he met with at the end of the season was only concerned about “their brand” and their NIL deals. It’s why he retired.
Every person who keeps talking about the lack of "discipline" on this team needs to go back and read this post 1000 times.

This DID NOT start when CNS retired and CKD came in and started playing music.

Of course not, but because CNS was such a master at implementing the "process" it became more obvious to us when we started seeing the undisciplined nature of CNS's last few teams. IOW, this didn't happen overnight. As great as CNS is, the very thing that separated him from every other coach/team eventually slipped into his program/team too.

I"ve got a theory that it's in other teams too, but because we eat, sleep and breathe Bama football and don't pay as much attention to other teams we just don't notice it.

I'm sure it's an issue everywhere - the difference is it's being managed (or hasn't been allowed to develop into a cancer) better than it has at Bama.

Otherwise we'd see consistently awful performances at UGA, OSU, texas, etc like we have at Bama. And it's not just us seeing it - everyone in the CFB world sees how undisciplined and poorly prepared Bama looks.

Any idea of this kind of stuff going on at OSU BIGTide?

Curious if there are similar rumblings at other big programs.

I think NIL and transfers is probably at the root of Kirby Smart’s “hands off”’ approach with the off the issues in Athens. Kirby is only responding with consequences for the things that “optics” tell him he must respond to (ex: domestic abuse Rara Thomas and assault Cobie Young). I get the feeling his “unwritten” policy is to say “You get in trouble, if I can let the judicial system handled it, I will. Do what need you to do on the field, and we’re good”. As long as the Athletic Department or University Administration doesn’t press him, Kirby just looks the other way. And know for certain he isn’t getting pressed by the “higher ups”.

Maybe.

Or maybe he's handling it like Saban did (behind the scenes). I think that's more likely. If you can keep cancer out of the program, you can retain control of the program. I suspect BowlCut has just done a better job of removing the players that were more problematic regarding team chemistry.

This whole NIL thing, and the transfer portal, and the impact it's having on college football is fascinating. Kind of like watching a train wreck. I'm quite sure there will be an expose in a few years on how the greed and lust for power brought an end to college football.

Good points and I agree 100% with the last statement. We don’t know whether or not other schools are handling NIL better. I tend to think they aren’t.

His pressers are a long stream of nothing but cliche'd coach speak. I wouldn't take anything from them. My guess is by this time next season there won't be one reporter showing up to his pressers. That's how uninformative they are.
I know we get tired of the comparisons but Saban's pressers were literally "get out your popcorn" entertainment. He gave insight to his why, he could take a question and find a way not to answer it and get on whatever tangent he had already preconceived. Deboer answers the actual questions and as you said gives coach speak. He needs to understand he is at the highest profile job in all of sports in America. Showing his personality and enthusiasm for the team, game, and what his plans will be will only help him with the fan base and the team.
