Both were in Oxford this weekend for the Ole Miss v. Texas A&M game.

Pettway is currently playing JUCO ball in Mississippi at Scooba Tech. The judge in his criminal case has (presumably) granted him youthful offender status, so as long as his academics are in order, he has a really strong change of playing football next season for a BCS program somewhere. Odds are decent he ends up in the SEC, in fact.

Williams is a much trickier deal. He's not playing football anywhere, and his youthful offender application was denied by the judge two weeks ago, so he's going to face felony charges over two separate incidents as an adult. There's a decent chance that he could do some prison time (perhaps a year or so). Still, though, obviously Ole Miss is interested enough to have him visiting on the sideline, so the implication is clear that they think he is possibly a viable option for them at some point.

Not sure if these guys will end up in Oxford, but it's a possibility. Will say this much: Ole Miss has previously taken felons kicked out of other SEC schools who have arguably done far worse than what these two were / are accused of doing.

I hated to see Dj do what he did but the kid can play some ball. Hopefully he has changed his mindset and will focus on doing good instead of being a menace.

Good luck to both of them. They both made horrible decisions but everyone deserves a 2nd chance.
The guy that steals to feed his family deserves a second chance......
The lady that fails to pay her taxes because she didn't understand how 1099s work, deserves a second chance......
Children who aren't completely sure of the difference between right and wrong deserve second chances.......

Thugs who randomly beat up the next "non-athlete" they meet........just because?

A man that attends church where I do who played with the gators with Emmit Smith, and is a friend of DJ's family and was told by family members, that someone from our staff has been in touch with DJ. He was told that if he keeps up the good work that UA might be willing to accept him back. Nothing I can validate but an insider here might be able to confirm or deny the story. I learned of this last week but was hesitant to mention it. Can anyone here check this?

Brent Calloway is at a junior college in AZ and Tyler Hayes is at a junior college in MS. I had wondered what happened to Eddie Williams. It seems he is the only one of the four who did not land at a junior college.

The reality is that all schools take chances on high-risk guys coming out of high school. Rolando McClain's risk was well considered by all who were pursuing him but Saban was able to keep him out of trouble while in Tuscaloosa. These guys are premier athletes and the fact is that unless they raped or killed a person then there was a good chance they'd land on their feet somewhere else.

Their acts are reprehensible but it wouldn't be the first time a thug has gotten a second or even third shot in college athletics.

Nor, if it turns out that way, would they be the first to turn their lives around.

What was DJ's part in that whole fiasco? :conf2:
Assaulted a kid and knocked him unconscious before taking his belongings (wallet and bookbag carrying Apple laptop, IIRC). Also stood by, apparently in some kind of a lookout role, while Williams assaulted a second student.

What they did was terrible, and thats why they have to pay a penalty to society, but...

Should we take them out back and execute them?

Regardless of what happened, I hope that they've learned from it and rebuild thier lives...

nothing to gain from not giving them the opportunity to change the direction of thier lives,... except to ensure that they have no other avenue available to change the path they were on.

They had a great opportunity and crapped on it. And a fair penalty has yet to be paid for violent muggings. Feeling bad is fine, but it's no recompense. Granted, if someone else decides to pick them up and dust them off, more power to 'em. Calloway and Williams already had multiple chances prior to this incident to be acceptable members of university society. No one is taking away anything - they gave up what they were given.

At this point in the legal process I think that's a pretty poor testimonial for Ole Miss.
