I was talking to an old friend yesterday and the subject came up of the Iran war. He said it was good having Israel on our side because they like killing people. Of course he didn't mean murder killing - just retribution and defensive killing. 
All of those are true in the U.S./Israel - Iranian conflict. Sad , but true. The escaping refugees are reporting Iranian civilians are souring on the U.S. led regime change. Lose the people, lose the war.
Actually, Ukraine is doing something similar. They're only drafting ages 25-60...

Despite the MAGA profession of faith, the problem with Trump isn't that he has the manners of Andrew Jackson. It's that he's genetically incapable of LEARNING ANYTHING.
Yeah, the two biggest questions remain unanswered. Or at least, not answered consistently and convincingly.
1. Why are we doing this?
2. How do we define victory? IOW, under what circumstances will we bring our forces home?
And in testimony to the idea that neither of these questions were adequately considered before the fact, we now have shifting answers to both.
In short, nobody knows the answer to either. I think Earle was right in that it was launched as a Wag The Dog-esque attempt to divert the public's attention. So when and under what circumstances does it end? We still don't know.
BTW -- If you haven't seen Wag The Dog, do it. Available on several streaming services, and the second-best satire I know of, behind only Network.
