Question: Why does our OC not send Milroe in to run the wildcat?

From all I know about Milroe he's a really great person and will do his dead level best at whatever "THE TEAM" needs from him. Someone posted prior to the bowl game that he was lining up at receiver during practice but, as expected, we didn't see that in the game. IIRC during the Hurts-Tua phase people were saying Jalen should convert to TE. We all see how that turned out. IMO at this point Milroe could be a contributor as a wide receiver, TE or even RB if he so chooses to stay at Alabama but the level and minutes of play depends on many factors with the roster as it is now. We'll have a much better idea of his role after spring practice and portal moves.

See coaches do it all the time though. It’s hard to beat having Bryce with the football in his hands.

I just did not see the physicality from Jalen Milroe to warrant any sort of special "package" for him to come in and run it. Sure, he's fast and he can run in the open field, but as far as pushing through the line to get 5 yards, he looked awkward and like he did not like contact.

Milroe was QB2. He was probably not asked, maybe even discouraged, to take on contact. Some are praising Simpson and saying he was a better option than JM but he wasn't the starter when Bryce went down so,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It's a difficult situation. I'm sure he wants to be QB and with the right kind of offense and coaching, I'd bet he would be brilliant. I'm not sure that would translate to the NFL though.

If willing to move positions, I do believe he would develop an NFL career. But he has to be willing to do that. It's not an easy ask or decision at all.

Because then he would be taking our best player (Bryce) off the field...
There is a place for that on a 3rd or 4th and inches type situation, but I think several other posters hit on what should have been the strategy. It should have been a package of plays that get him in the game in a variety of positions. He could line up in the backfield, at WR, or a TE. You have no idea what he will do. He could be the focus of the play or a decoy. Let's be honest we didn't have a WR or TE that couldn't come out of the game for a few plays and we would have felt it like we would have if it had been Cooper, Ridley, Julio, Waddle, or Smith. You can always have Gibbs in the formation somewhere and he's a threat. Even as eye candy Milroe would have been useful.

You say passing is not his strength. Then why wildcat with him at all? His wildcat package would seemingly be strongest if there were a threat he could throw the ball accurately. If he is just going to run anyway, then let a running back run the wildcat. Or don't run it all. This season, I would not have pulled Bryce for a gimmic anyway.

There's context here. CNS believes in seniority, especially at the QB position. Plus, the game JM played was a one off knowing BY would be back soon. I fully believe CNS/BOB thought JM would be serviceable enough for us to win the game more easily than we did and probably didn't foresee JM struggling as much as he did. We are extremely lucky we didn't drop that game.

It's my opinion that if BY would have gone down with a season-ending injury there would have been a QB#1 competition play out during the next few games between JM and TS.

Also, back a few years ago when AJM was our #3 QB and GMac was being backed up by the #2 (can't remember who it was...Star Jackson, maybe?) it was thought that if GMac could have gone down for the season the staff knew AJM was really a better option, but he still remained #3 on the depth chart.

I know we said the same thing about Jalen at one point, but the difference is Jalen had arm and passing potential that surpassed where JM is right now. Jalen Hurts needed to learn to do one thing: be a QB in the pocket, not a scrambler.

JM has a nice strong arm (that's been demonstrated on a few bombs) but I've seen very little evidence that he's got the arm talent to throw the other type of passes he needs to throw.

So I agree and think he'll either change positions OR transfer if he loses the job to TS or one of the true freshmen.

I do believe it was Star Jackson. Then he transferred out prior to 2011. Phillip Sims and AJ then competed for the job into the 2011 season, but AJ won out by the Penn State game. Frankly, IMO, AJ had won the job prior to that but Penn State was when the separation truly went public.

The change in the amount of participation in order to keep your "red shirt" has changed since then too IIRC. Back in those days if you played "one play" you burned your red shirt. Now I think it's appearances in 4 games, which is why we'll see the #3 get a few snaps here and there after the #2 has made an appearance in blow out wins.

But I don't think that changes the original point of how CNS stays pretty loyal to his #2.

Personally, I would like to see him in the RB rotation. He is a much better runner than he is a QB in the current offensive system.

I would love to see Milroe used like UGA uses Bowers. Move him around - TE, H back, WR - and find ways to get the ball in his hands in space. He's big, strong, and fast. We should find a way to get that talent on the field.

But that would require having an imagination. Not our strong suit on offense of late.
