I have wondered this for two seasons. Is he not mobile enough or big enough? His strong suit doesn't seem to be passing.
Milroe was QB2. He was probably not asked, maybe even discouraged, to take on contact. Some are praising Simpson and saying he was a better option than JM but he wasn't the starter when Bryce went down so,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I just did not see the physicality from Jalen Milroe to warrant any sort of special "package" for him to come in and run it. Sure, he's fast and he can run in the open field, but as far as pushing through the line to get 5 yards, he looked awkward and like he did not like contact.
There is a place for that on a 3rd or 4th and inches type situation, but I think several other posters hit on what should have been the strategy. It should have been a package of plays that get him in the game in a variety of positions. He could line up in the backfield, at WR, or a TE. You have no idea what he will do. He could be the focus of the play or a decoy. Let's be honest we didn't have a WR or TE that couldn't come out of the game for a few plays and we would have felt it like we would have if it had been Cooper, Ridley, Julio, Waddle, or Smith. You can always have Gibbs in the formation somewhere and he's a threat. Even as eye candy Milroe would have been useful.Because then he would be taking our best player (Bryce) off the field...
There's context here. CNS believes in seniority, especially at the QB position. Plus, the game JM played was a one off knowing BY would be back soon. I fully believe CNS/BOB thought JM would be serviceable enough for us to win the game more easily than we did and probably didn't foresee JM struggling as much as he did. We are extremely lucky we didn't drop that game.Milroe was QB2. He was probably not asked, maybe even discouraged, to take on contact. I know we said the same thing about Jalen at one point, but the difference is Jalen had arm and passing potential that surpassed where JM is right now. Jalen Hurts needed to learn to do one thing: be a QB in the pocket, not a scrambler. It's a difficult situation. I'm sure he wants to be QB and with the right kind of offense and coaching, I'd bet he would be brilliant. I'm not sure that would translate to the NFL though.
If willing to move positions, I do believe he would develop an NFL career. But he has to be willing to do that. It's not an easy ask or decision at all.
I do believe it was Star Jackson. Then he transferred out prior to 2011. Phillip Sims and AJ then competed for the job into the 2011 season, but AJ won out by the Penn State game. Frankly, IMO, AJ had won the job prior to that but Penn State was when the separation truly went public. There's context here. CNS believes in seniority, especially at the QB position. It's my opinion that if BY would have gone down with a season-ending injury there would have been a QB#1 competition play out during the next few games between JM and TS.
Also, back a few years ago when AJM was our #3 QB and GMac was being backed up by the #2 (can't remember who it was...Star Jackson, maybe?) it was thought that if GMac could have gone down for the season the staff knew AJM was really a better option, but he still remained #3 on the depth chart.
The change in the amount of participation in order to keep your "red shirt" has changed since then too IIRC. Back in those days if you played "one play" you burned your red shirt. Now I think it's appearances in 4 games, which is why we'll see the #3 get a few snaps here and there after the #2 has made an appearance in blow out wins.I do believe it was Star Jackson. Wouldn't that just be the backup QB in the shotgun?I have wondered this for two seasons. Is he not mobile enough or big enough? His strong suit doesn't seem to be passing.
