My Dad was an Ole Miss alum(1950) and we pulled for the Rebels during some really lean years post-Vaught, and saw the coming of Hugh Freeze, and his downfall.

I do remember watching some of his press conferences during his final couple of years there. He always looked like he'd been on a 3-day bender, unshaven, glass-eyed. I will have to go check his post-game presser after Saturday's loss to see if I can recognize that look.

As a proof of concept, he did succeed at Ole Miss, making it known that you can win there. His downfall was his ego, and stupidity. Getting fired for trolling hookers on a state-owned cell phone. Though, he was one of the few coaches (if any) who beat Saban two years in a row. Had them on the ropes the 3rd year.

I laugh whenever someone says Auburn is a destination job. Destination to get fired, I suppose. How many ex-coaches do they have on the payroll?

Ed Orgeron said:
“I gotta tell you, we had a meeting, (LSU administrators) said, ‘Coach, things are not going well,’” Orgeron recalled. “(I said) ‘No [feces]. Ray Charles could see that brother.’

“And Scott Woodward is a friend of mine today, really. Lot of respect for the way that they handled me. He said ‘Coach, you got 17.1 million dollars on your contract; we’re going to give it to you.’

“I said, ‘What time you want me to leave and what door do you want me to walk out of, brother?’”
COLLEGE STATION — Jimbo Fisher will receive about $77 million to not coach Texas A&M football, prompting a “congrats on the buyout, it’s a great number” to Fisher from one of the hosts of the Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast.

“Thank you,” Fisher responded, adding with a chuckle, “Hey, I’m not complaining

What incentive would there be for Freeze to negotiate? The contract is quite clear on what he would get if terminated. Isn't Sexton his agent?

The ONLY way the barn can reduce his buyout is to either come up with "just cause" or wait for it to reduce over time...
If Rane and the Lowders want Freeze gone, but Freeze wants to stay, you're right...he (Freeze) has no incentive to negotiate.

The incentive comes if Freeze himself wants out. As in, "Look, neither of us is happy with the situation. IOW, your team is being coached by a guy who wants out. Is that what you really want? Let's make a deal."

"Look coach, I know we owe you 20 million but you and I both know you don't want to be here. I'll give you a hundo and two bottles of diddy oil, how's that sound boss?"

Freeze: I'll take it!

TBF, who (outside of awbern) says that it is a destination job?

Every time that job comes open, the only candidates are second tier (at best) coaches...

I remember Cole Cublic doing this to us last year with our "Greatest Offensive Line of All Time" nonsense. Just returning the favor.
Cube isn't really an Auburn homer, though . He's been a lot easier on Bama this season than half our fanbase has. I like him, he's very impartial. And our O line did show flashes of being that last year at times.

You gotta want to get out really, really bad to concede million$...

I have no doubt that Sexton tells him to just sit tight and wait them out saying: "Just smile and wave, Hugh. Just smile and wave..."

I wonder if he'll even pretend to prepare for ULM or aTm. Like last year, put all his eggs in one basket and prepare for only us.

While it's not certain (see New Mexico State last year), they'll probably beat ULM anyway. They'd trade a butt-whoopin' from aTm in exchange for a win against us in a nanosecond.

I could see them repeating last year's approach.

Then the question becomes whether 5-7 with a win over Alabama keeps him around? I think it probably does. What about 4-8 if they play it straight and actually prep for ULM and aTm? Maybe. Maybe not.

Regardless, does Freeze really want another year in the barn? I don't know.
Does he want be there another year? You think he’s going to leave without being fired and miss out on the buyout?

The Alabama game, as usual will disproportionately affect his job safety. He wins and he gets another year for sure, he loses and all bets are off.

They do have a great incoming class, but it's safe to assume they are bought and paid for and the people writing the checks won't change even if the head coach does. Also, they had the #10 last year, it hasn't exactly translated to on field success. There is a risk to giving a mediocre coach top recruiting classes, he could have just enough success to make him hard to get rid of.

Alabama can have a lot of influence on job security in the next few games. Oklahoma could lose their next three games, setting Venables seat on fire. No question both those coaches are performing below the talent level of their teams.
