Link: QB A. J. McCarron Update (1/23): AJ is set on Alabama

Re: A J McCarron

If I had an indication that a kid was doing such while on my $$ I would send him packing immediately....
Its been done before...seems I remember Oklahoma sending BJ Scott home last year for the same thing. I am not sure though and if that is correct then I doubt coach Saban instructed him to do just that. Probably just BJ recruiting for himself.

Re: A J McCarron

I understand that it goes on but there is something about being encouraged to do so that would bother me personally..... Example: I don't think UA would appreciate it if Kiffin sent David Oku on an official "mission" to sway Janzen Jackson or Patrick Patterson away from UA in favor of UT. That just seems unethical to me....

I see your point, but the fact is it's legal, theres no way to govern it to keep it from happening if you wanted to, and every one else is doing it (see Russell Shepard), so you might as well do it to. If not, it's gonna one less gun in your recruiting arsenal.

This is an absolutely silly discussion. All schools do it and they've done it for as long as I can remember (pretty long). The only schools who don't do it are the ones whose recruits don't have multiple visit invitations...

We all know kids are going to do it. I just hope they approve the proposed early signing period they are discussing....

Recruits have to use a little common sense. One doesn't commit to Bama then go to Tennessee dressed in Bama Shirt, Bama hat, Bama Jacket, carrying Bama luggage, a Bama playbook under his arm yelling "Roll Tide" as he gets off the bus.

May end up getting him asked to leave, but man I'd love to see a kid with that spirit.

Heck, I'd take all of my visits too. I think I'd give Tulane (party in NOLA) a visit and then head to UNLV (for obvious reasons).

If CNS told him it was okay to take his visits, why not? Thse guys get treated like kings on their official visits. Wouldn't YOU go?

Since the beginning of college football this has been going on at every school. A lot of the guys are friends that play for different schools, so they want to have the opportunity to play with these guys in college. Know one can stop kids from talking to each other about anything they want to talk about. Tim Teabow has said many times that he has talked with recruits about coming to Florida. :)

It's all about two things: kids having a chance to build/deepen relationships that can ultimately sway an uncommitted kid our way AND making opposing coaching staffs spend time on useless projects. Remember that CNS is in the business of outworking his opposition.

If I were coach I would think twice before granting a courtesy visit to a kid who is firm to another school. Seems to risky to me....

Example: UT's biggest weekend of the year is 01-30 yet Trent Richardson will be there too. This seems foolish to me (UT's part) because we all know TR is not signing with UT. However, Pat Patterson is a potential signee so I wouldn't want him anywhere near TR!!!

Just my opinion....

Is that fear I smell? BTW, I don't blame you for feeling that way.

Seriously, seems like common sense to me.... I dont think you would want Eric Gordon visiting Bama with intentions of working Janzen Jackson for 48 hours on UA's nickel.

Bottom line is this is going to happen. We can't tell the kids what they can and can't do. And on that note if one school is condoning it then all of them better otherwise they are handicapping themselves. And it is obvious that Saban wants our players to bond and be cohesive because it is essential to success as a team. And he is getting these players pumped about playing for Bama and encourages them to pass that on.

We can't get bent out of shape if other schools do it to us because we will do it to them if we get the chance. Just like no team gets mad if a committed prospect takes a visit to another school because it is completely legal and within their rights. If the university doesn't like it then send the recruit packing, which did happen to BJ last year because he basically ran interference on Julio all along. If I recall correctly when Julio visited OU BJ called and asked to take an official visit that weekend and OU originally said yes and later cancelled it when they figured out what was going on and wanted to get Julio alone.

There is a lot of strategy in planning your official visits and great recruiters like Saban, Meyer, and I'm sure Kiffin as well have these weekends well thought out and aren't going to let an 18 year old kid out smart and out recruit them.

I guess if one believes that it is "unethical" for a recruit, committed to another school, to attempt to recruit for his committed school while visiting another school then shouldn't one also believe that it is unethical for the other school to be inviting recruits that are committed to another school and attempting to entice them to renege on their committment?

That's just a risk that a coach has to accept if he is going to spend recruiting visits on those committed to other schools.

The case where an uncommitted recruit is actively recruiting for another school while on a recruiting visit might be a better case to question.

Excellent post. However, I don't believe it is "unethical" to invite an obviously firm commit to your school.... I would substitute the word foolish!

BTW, I am only referring to those kids that are clearly NOT signing with you..... ala Trent Richardson.

I just wish someone would explain why it's so unethical for a kid to influence his friends to go to the same school. Friends don't let friends go to Tennessee.
