I'm hoping he doesn't start our next game.

Some observations after reading this thread. Football is the ultimate team game and I know from experience no one player is more important than the team, never has, never will be. In every team sport each player has a role to play.

I know the point you are trying to make and it's a good point of "everybody matters when you are on a team sport."

That said, this thread going 40+ pages attests to the fact that the QB position is more important than, let's say the right guard position. His position is important, but no one could argue it is equally as important as the QB position.

The reason the QB position is arguably the "most important" position is becaues he not only touches the ball every play, but he then "distributes" the ball on every play to another player (hopefully the correct player), especially if there are options/decisions put on him in the style of the offensive system.

I think if I were trying to sum up the last 40 pages I'd say our biggest concern in all of this is "ball distribution to our talented athletes." ALL of this starts with the QB!

This is playing out like I thought it might. It wasn't my hope, but here it is. I never thought Jalen would be unseated as QB this season. Tua simply wouldn't be able to make up enough ground to show the coaches he was ready, and "win the team over". The thing that could happen though is with Tua having two springs, two summer and fall camps, and one full season with some real playing time he would pass Jalen unless Jalen showed some real improvement as a pocket passer, and sadly he hasn't shown that on a consistent basis. There have been flashes, but not consistently against our top competition. Tua isn't quite the runner Jalen is, but he is no slouch, and from what I've seen he is a much more natural passer. The thing Jalen had this year was experience and his cool demeanor. Tua will catch up to that with time, and his passing would improve as well. At this point I will be surprised if Tua isn't the starting QB against Louisville next year. If that's the route CNS goes it may be good to go ahead and name him starter after spring so Jalen has a chance to transfer. I may be totally wrong, and I trust CNS. He is on the Mount Rushmore of coaches, but this is what I see playing out now. It makes me sad because I like Jalen. Let's all get real do you think we lose the IB with AJ, Blake, or GMac at QB? I for one don't. I think Coker would have pulled it out as well. I don't like typing this. I'm not an eeyore, but I live in the real world.

I disagree - he lacks lateral quickness and escapability. RBs have to be more quick than fast.

Agree completely. Jalen’s skill set lends itself to what he is right now. He’s not a true RPO guy because he lacks lateral quickness and he’s not a true pro style guy either.

Agreed, but the one thing he is pretty good at is being "shifty" once his speed gets up. We've seen him "juke" some corners and safeties and make them look silly. In an "I" formation with a full back he could probably be successful with downhill running, but probably not from a single set when the qb is in the pistol.

If Tua were to overtake him it might be interesting what he would do if he chose not to transfer.

He could be a fantastic, deadly blocker as an H-back or tightend, but I'm not sure about his hands as a receiver.

I wonder if he would go all Tebow though and decide that if he couldn't play QB he wasn't going to play at all.

I know that the second string QB has ALWAYS been the better option according to us Tidefans for as long and I remember and this discussion has also revealed things that I was totally unaware of as far as the locker room is concerned. But I maintain that our starting QB is starting for a reason regardless of a bad game here and there and two losses in two years none of which were really his fault. How old is the kid, 19? I am 51. Coach is 66. I choose to trust the coach and see no reason why we need to pull this 19 year old kid that led us to the National Championship Game last year as a true freshman and could very well do it again this year. Coach Saban has plenty of time before our next game to implement the changes that he knows need to be made.

Losing the confidence of your teammates is a pretty good reason to lose your starting job.

And while I "trust" CNS, I'm not sure he'll pull the trigger on benching Jalen.

There won't be any "benching" until Jalen is given full opportunity between the end of this season and the beginning of next season, to improve on the field, "win the team" (if this truly is a problem) AND earn it during practices and scrimmages. I think CNS will exhaust all avenues (in support of Jalen) before benching him. Which to be honest, I think is the thing to do.

Put it this way, I would be SHOCKED to see anyone but Jalen play QB in our very next game but I would be completely unsurprised if he does not resume his duties again next year.

I thought you had understood. The staff understand exactly what needs to be done. Otherwise "implement the changes" isn't going to happen. Jalen has to show that he's willing - and able - to make those changes. The staff can't run out there and rip the ball from his hands. I admire your optimism and your persistence... :D

Jalen has a higher ceiling as a RB.

We got folks in here trying to move Hurts to RB... insane.

It got brought up. We are not discussing any of this in a vacuum. The context is diverse with many factors of what our qb play should look/perform like. If some think Tua might overtake Jalen, it's the natural direction of discussion boards to start asking, "What's next for Jalen."

I agree with others that he couldn't play RB the way we use running backs.
