QB Competition 2018

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

There won't be any "benching" until Jalen is given full opportunity between the end of this season and the beginning of next season, to improve on the field, "win the team" (if this truly is a problem) AND earn it during practices and scrimmages. I think CNS will exhaust all avenues (in support of Jalen) before benching him. Which to be honest, I think is the thing to do.
And that might be the biggest problem.

If Jalen has lost the support of the team, Saban going as far as he possibly can to support Jalen could only make the situation worse.

I'm assuming Jalen has to check the boxes of all the criteria I put out there. Plus if he improves in the areas that are causing angst among the WR's and RB's then "winning the team" happens automatically.

I agree and Saban knows that gamble well. We saw what happened with Shula when he decided simply to disregard the feelings of the team entirely - the team turned into a bunch of free-lancers...

Losing the confidence of your teammates is a pretty good reason to lose your starting job.

And while I "trust" CNS, I'm not sure he'll pull the trigger on benching Jalen.

Common man, of course he lost the confidence of his team mates. The coaches have given him the reins to RPO us down the field on every play and that approach CLEARLY has gotten stifled by better defenses (eg LSU, MSU and the aubs). My contention is that the coaches set him up for failure by trusting him to carry the load when he should have never been put in that position. Why did we not keep hammering the running game like we did in first drive of the second half Saturday? It was clearly working so make them stop it. That is what the coaches are for. Look, I am just a fan. But I see nothing wrong in his play to warrant pulling his starting status that is not directly attributable to coaching errors. And if there is a lockerroom issue Coach Nick Saban, probably the best college football coach in history, WILL get it rectified.

Modified it to a true statement for you... :D

I thought you had understood. The staff understand exactly what needs to be done. Otherwise "implement the changes" isn't going to happen. Jalen has to show that he's willing - and able - to make those changes. The staff can't run out there and rip the ball from his hands. I admire your optimism and your persistence... :D

 ...and I really enjoy the conversation and the insight from everyone

Looking at our 2018 record they can put a lineman at QB and we should win every game. The schedule is pure garbage other than LSU and Aubs. We could win every game and not make top 5. 2018 weakest schedule ever.

Alabama 2018 schedule
Sept. 1 vs. Louisville (Orlando)
Sept. 8 vs. Arkansas State
Sept. 15: at Ole Miss
Sept. 22: Texas A&M at Alabama

Oct. 20: at Tennessee
Oct. 27: bye

Speaking of that, the TD and the almost tip-TD by Hentges are throws he NEVER makes. Wonder if that is due to pressure from the WRs.

He normally never makes either pass he threw to the endzone.

My dad and I were talking about it, and I commented Saturday was probably JH's worst game at Alabama. Throws like those two are uncharacteristic. He scrambled/floated OOB for 10 yard losses instead of throwing the ball away.

If Jackson comes back, your opener might be tough.

I may have cussed in front of my child after that play..... very uncharacteristic

Put it this way, I would be SHOCKED to see anyone but Jalen play QB in our very next game but I would be completely unsurprised if he does not resume his duties again next year.

Yes, you may be onto something there. I know that is the thread title and we seem to have turned to what is happening now rather that the QB battle for next year. Does anyone here see Jalen as an NFL QB? Are we not trying to help our guys get to the next level if that is their dream? Would Jalen change positions to get to the league? As Earle said earlier...will be fascinating to see what unfolds.

I couldn't believe he threw the pass to Juedy that resulted in our first TD.

I'll give credit to him that he had the courage to break his tendency to throw 50-50 balls and do it.

That said, taking a look at his total stats (http://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=400933932) his total yards passing from this game would have only been 67 total yards on 12 completions without this "lucky" completion that could have been called OPI.

67 yards is all we got from the QB passing game out side of one unscripted, lucky play. That won't beat decent teams.
