Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

None of us know for sure what, or if, CNS sat them down and told them how things were going to be. I am of the opinion that CNS does not always do a good job getting his point across, or rather he speaks in terms that are difficult to decipher. This is okay when talking to the media and booster groups, but IMO may not be how to address this with two young players, both who really want to know the pecking order or where they really stand heading into the new season. My point is that it is okay to be all business and aloof with the media, but I don't think this is how you address the issue with two 20 year old kids. If I am wrong, then I will accept the flack, but if I am right CNS has done both of them a disservice.

This 👆🏼

I am not sure Saban allows himself to show his compassionate side as much as he should. There are some times in life when you have to throttle back and be a little more touchy feely. This is easier said than done for many of us. But behind closed doors we have to figure out a way to make it happen when its needed.

We have seen glimpses of this from Saban the last few years. I honestly think he is still learning this skill as he gets older and its not a finished product yet. I believe he knows this and is working towards making this part of his own development, knowledge-base and personality. It will not happen over night and in the end. It will make him even better!!

Here's the deal. It doesn't matter if Jalen or others think CNS SHOULD have talked to him or not.

Jalen should have never said what he said today. Bottom line, it doesn't matter if you feel CNS should have handled it differently or not, Jalen crossed a line that in my memory no other player has.

True................it's better to handle your business in private rather than dragging it out in public

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Aren’t there exit interviews after spring practice? Those are supposed to be private, direct sit-downs looking at strengths, weaknesses, and how to proceed.

It’s increasingly my opinion that Jalen just didn’t like what he heard.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Somebody said it, but two years ago, Hurts won the coaches and team over in spite of Barnett being a redshirt freshman. Ironically, the same thing has happened again but Jalen's on the other side of the situation now.

He's handled it so well, up to now. Really I'm shocked like everybody else.

I listened to the video, but somehow I missed the statement about "I've created my own brand." Man, that doesn't sound good especially when about the only thing that comes to my mind is poor passing, one read and run, keep when you should have handed off, and running out of bounds on 3rd down 10 yards shy of the stick.

It was in the last 10 seconds of the clip.

He is lashing out. I can only assume if they had all cleaned the air, maybe the public would not be getting to see this side of Jalen .

Maybe that's the thing. Maybe he's just an average guy (but very good athlete) that is no better and no worse than most of us. After all, very darn few people are as "class", or beyond reproach, as some folks assumed Jalen was. They loved the guy, but fact is, we pretty often don't even know our own neighbors well enough to know what their character really is, behind closed doors. Things have been easy for Jalen, probably all his life. Now, facing some adversity, he doesn't take it as well as many of us may have thought he would, or perhaps even as well as he thought he would. Welcome to the real world Jalen. It ain't all sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows everywhere.

We're all human, and while we do hold to a certain type by the people that know us best, being human mean we're also bound to mess up here and there. I feel this is Hurts mess up; how he responds to his misstep is up to him.

After listening again to the video, I just hope he responds to his misstep somewhere else.

CNS's answer to the question of whether Jalen would be on the roster, "I have no idea", is likely a major source of Jalen's hurt feelings. IMO, it was a mistake that suggested that CNS did not trust Jalen's commitment or care enough to ask about it. Not saying that was the case, but it sounded like it - though I didn't believe that was the case. Obviously, Jalen took it that way - understandably so. Not defending him for airing it out in public, but understand his hurt. OTOH, CNS has publicly made it clear that Jalen has an equal chance to claim the job, meaning that he has not abandoned him, so, he could forgive or look over what could be considered one misstep. It may be hard for Jalen to do, he may feel he has received the cold shoulder from the staff. He's still a teenager til Wednesday. This is all very sad. Hopefully, they can repair things. Hopefully, CNS is understanding - though I realize we don't know all that has transpired.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Jalen can learn a really valuable lesson through this that will help him all his life if he handles it right. Life is full of disappointments and sometimes things don't work out like they should. To me it's his dad, not CNS that needs to help him navigate through this.
My guess is that this would've been settled in the spring if Tua had not gotten injured. Jalen had a golden opportunity to move in front of Tua and he didn't. IMO his attitude seemed a little off in the spring too.
Jalen is a good kid and I hope it all works out well for him. I think his days as the starting QB at Alabama are over. Airing this out in the press benefits no one.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

What about Damien's feelings about running against 9 and 10 man fronts that had zero respect for our passing game ? What about the receivers running routes without a shot of seeing the ball ? Do their feelings matter ? I gotta be honest, I don't know about the team, but JH has lost me today, not that I matter.

I think Tua being the starter and easing up the fronts for the run game is the main reason Harris came back. He's no Derrick Henry. He'll benefit from an offense that has balance because he's a great single cut runner and pass catcher. He won't have to dance around the line of scrimmage much.

But I'm pretty sure that Saban had "no idea" because of the comments of Jalen's Dad. He's the guy, imo, that started this "narrative" that Jalen talked about.

After being asked about Coach Saban requesting they keep it off social media, Jalen says "the coaches don't control this situation".

I agree 100%

I had no idea what Jalen intended to do after his father’s comments either. Seems to me the answer CNS gave at media days was appropriate.

One thing is for sure, I don't like this distraction at all. And while Jalen's comments where indicative of frustration, they were also inappropriate, considering this entire uncertainty was started by Averion Hurts, "the biggest free agent in college football history." nonsense.

Seniority doesn't exist in college football.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Interesting Jalen said he represents himself and his family, no mention of Alabama.

Absolutely. And he says he had made himself this "brand". That reminded me of his Dad's "biggest free agent in college football" comment.
