It’s part of the scheme we use. They drop bc they have to based on the formation/play. It’s why sark worked us and kiffin seemingly always works us. They know the formations and players and can put people in positions where they are doing something they aren’t great at. Tennessee too. I shudder to think what will happen in that game if downs can’t figure things out
This seems to be a new(ish) wrinkle that is from Steele. Anderson did drop some, but not that often. We would send 4 guys on 80% + of the pass plays, even if that meant we were flipping coverages and rolling a S over and dropping the Star of the CB back on the other side more like a S. Steele isn't doing that and is instead having the OLB play flats, which means we are only send 3 on the rush on a lot of downs.

Sometimes I wonder if the NC during the covid year might not have been all it's cracked up to be. Now before I get bashed, I didn't watch a single game that year. How many games did we play? There were not any live spectators, correct? I know we had Mac and he had a great year as well as others. But, not every team played all of their games did they?
I'm as frusterated as anyone about tonight, but I've been a Bama Fan since 1966 and can't let this comment pass. The 2020 team was one of the best ever IMO having played an all SEC schedule and were superior in all phases of the game. Yeah they were what they were cracked up to be and way more. Good grief!

Thank you, my sentiments exactly. I wondered why Milroe was even offered a scholarship. BoB didnt recruit him and he was the incoming OC. It didnt make sense then and still puzzles me.

Im firmly in the camp that Saban has been trying to play with house money the last 3 years. But this was also recruiting during Covid too where in person evaluation was prohibited.

main takeaways:

1) Milroe was really really bad. Having one really bad interception is a problem. Having two? Then it enters very very bad game territory. On a scale of interceptions from 1 being a ball your reciever drops into the arms of a defender and 10 being a bad throw and bad decision, these were like 9.85s. His pocket presence is nonexistent and he is constantly stepping right into the pressure. At other times he makes a bad dash backwards and sideways after his first read isn't wide open......he was really bad in the A&M game(which was the last meaningful action he had), and he was really bad again tonight. I don't know if we have anyone better or not(I guess not?), but to act like he isn't the biggest problem is silly imo. Yes we may have other problems too, but not having a qb in 2023 is a killer.

2) Way too much blame is being thrown on the offensive line for the pass blocking. Pocket after pocket like the 2020 season(those were the best pockets mac was stepping into I've ever seen) are very atypical. In the real world, a pocket eventually breaks down somewhat......even when the protection is *very good*. The bigger problem is milroe's management of the pocket. Time after time he would actually be responsible for pivoting right into the collapse of the pocket. A lot of people in this forum have an unreasonable expectation for what a pretty good pocket will look like in 2023. Just because pass protection wasn't 2020 level doesn't mean it was bad. Now the bigger problem with the offensive line was they were getting good push for the run game the first possession or two, but after that not so much and it was very inconsistent. I thought after our first series- "we can just run right at these guys time after time, even if they know it's coming". Clearly, we *couldn't* do that.

3) The defense was very good in the first half, and then had some problems in the secondary(and DL- no pressure) for much of the second half. But again, here some have to adjust their expectations. Nobody really *consistently* stops a good offense like that in 2023 anymore. Expecting that to be the standard like it's 2008 is just not realistic.

And it's for that very reason why having a qb like Milroe is just not going to get it done in today's college football environment. I don't know how we got in this situation actually where roster management was such that their was no above average qb ready to step in for the 2023 season. Very frustrating......

TOO many MISTAKES! TWO TOO many interceptions by our QB. QB did not have time to do much because of lack of OL blocking (QB sacked too many times.) TOO many PENALTIES! The C needs to know when to center the ball to the QB and not move the ball without snapping it.

DEFENSE did not touch their QB. He, the Horn QB, was able to throw the ball effectively because he was NOT rushed to get rid of it quick. Some defenders played good, others did not.

Hopefully, Bama will win the rest of its games, win the west division and then BEAT the Dogs in the SEC Championship Game. If, when, this happens, I will be happy.

Now, is everybody happy that Texas will come into the SEC next year? Well, their record against Bama is now what? 8 - 2? It could get worse in the future. I still say that in the 1960's Joe Namath scored to beat Texas, but there was NO replays by officials in those days. Tommy Nobis became a hero for stopping Namath in the end zone.

Roll Tide Roll!!!!!!!

If you’re Simpson or Buchner, and you don’t even sniff the field when the starting QB is stinking it up, how long do you stick around?
I don't think this is the correct question. The better question is this: how long will you take to force the coaches to start you? If we had a better option than Jalen, he wouldn't have started in the first place. We could be in for a long season if someone doesn't step up and force the coaches to make the change. At the end of the day, it's up to the individual player.....

I think Coach may be thinking he loses the team if he moved a different direction from Milroe. They felt he had earned it.

I’m guessing Buckner moves into the Starter role by mid-season
That’s probably the answer. He was in line for the job.

Most 70 something year olds don't want to reinvent themselves like Madonna every 12 minutes. Maybe it is time I don't know.
Then retire.

I don't care one bit what Saban wants or likes - he's paid an ABSURD amount of money to win football games, and he's not doing that.

When you're paid at / near the top of your industry pay scale, you perform or you're replaced.

Saban isn't performing. Make all the excuses you want, he's just not.

I don't care if he's 30 or 130 - he needs to do his job or step aside.

As I stated, I didn't watch any games that year. How many did we play? If we played all of the scheduled ones then I completely agree. It WAS the covid year. That's all I'm saying. How many players didn't play due to protocol on any team? Not looking for an argument. Just wondering is all. I'm not really horribly frustrated. Tonight didn't surprise me a whole lot.

Even outside of the turnovers, Milroe was just uncomfortable all night, OL had something to do with that but Milroe is not a pocket passer that can dissect a defense like a Bryce. He’s more of a Nick Marshall or freshman Hurts type QB which I believe we can win with but just gonna have to take Rees to realize that if Milroe is gonna be the QB going forward.

Jesus no one is making excuses for him, I am just talking about the state of the game. I am just a 36-year-old guy with an opinion. Saban and I don't communicate.
