Word out of Aubarn is that Freeze is miserable

A physician friend and I have been texting back and forth concerning Freeze for the last several weeks. Not just his post game stuff but also some of Monday pressers and other weekly appearances are “off”. The guy seems “unwell”. Whether it is a physical illness or stress or some combination of things, Freeze just seems unhealthy.

Freeze had health issues (back surgery and staph infection) at Liberty. I’m wondering if that is playing into it, along with pressure of dealing with unreal expectations of the “weirdest little cult on the plains”. My physician speculated it could be a chronic pain situation (from back surgery).

Wasn't he hospitalized just very recently and took a separate flight from the team to their game? I think it was food poisoning? Man, I wouldn't wish that stuff on ANYBODY.

Yep. At first he wasn’t going to coach the Kentucky game due to an “illness” but then Saturday morning he took a flight to Lexington to join the team. It was reported to be food poisoning..

IMO there is something health wise going on with him.

Ole Miss was buying players left and right when Freeze was there. They got the number one player in the country twice. He was Michael Oher's high school coach and went with him to Ole Miss as an assistant. When programs like Auburn and Ole Miss buy players everybody knows it. It shows in their play. This caught up with Dye and Lowder. Auburn's 1957 National Championship team was on probation for paying players and could not play in a bowl game. Only the elite programs got away with buying players. It is a non issue now.

I wonder if he'll even pretend to prepare for ULM or aTm. Like last year, put all his eggs in one basket and prepare for only us.

While it's not certain (see New Mexico State last year), they'll probably beat ULM anyway. They'd trade a butt-whoopin' from aTm in exchange for a win against us in a nanosecond.

I could see them repeating last year's approach.

Then the question becomes whether 5-7 with a win over Alabama keeps him around? I think it probably does. What about 4-8 if they play it straight and actually prep for ULM and aTm? Maybe. Maybe not.

Regardless, does Freeze really want another year in the barn? I don't know.
I aint sure their morale will be up during the Iron Bowl................he might be ready to leave town

My Aubie relatives only want to talk about the recruiting class and next year. They seem to think he is a sure thing for next year so long as they just don't get embarrassed from here on out. But, if the recruits start bailing on him, he might be in trouble despite the buyout amount.

In that case I think CHF would take the money and run.

What incentive would there be for Freeze to negotiate? The contract is quite clear on what he would get if terminated. Isn't Sexton his agent?

The ONLY way the barn can reduce his buyout is to either come up with "just cause" or wait for it to reduce over time...
The deal’s a deal, but if both sides are unhappy, they can always renegotiate. Perhaps Freeze thinks that tanking (without providing proof of tanking) might get them to that point…

My Dad was an Ole Miss alum(1950) and we pulled for the Rebels during some really lean years post-Vaught, and saw the coming of Hugh Freeze, and his downfall.

I do remember watching some of his press conferences during his final couple of years there. He always looked like he'd been on a 3-day bender, unshaven, glass-eyed. I will have to go check his post-game presser after Saturday's loss to see if I can recognize that look.

As a proof of concept, he did succeed at Ole Miss, making it known that you can win there. His downfall was his ego, and stupidity. Getting fired for trolling hookers on a state-owned cell phone. Though, he was one of the few coaches (if any) who beat Saban two years in a row. Had them on the ropes the 3rd year.

I laugh whenever someone says Auburn is a destination job. Destination to get fired, I suppose. How many ex-coaches do they have on the payroll?
Yes

I just saw this list of potential replacements for Hugh Freeze (on a site I will not link because of the name):

Deion Sanders (yeah, right)

Rhett Lashlee (the most likely given job history)

Shane Beamer (yeah, right)

Sean Lewis (HC San Diego State)

Jamey Chadwell (a second hiring from Liberty?)

I hope the good people on the Plains are enjoying that rollercoaster ride.

The hope Auburn had is after CNS retired they could resurrect their program.

It's not looking favorable even if Bama had 2 losses before Nov.

TBF, who (outside of awbern) says that it is a destination job?

Every time that job comes open, the only candidates are second tier (at best) coaches...

Given Freeze's reputation for being a self-serving son-of-a-sandy-place-near-the-sea, I am sort of enjoying his continued ineptitude. I mean, the guy screwed around on his wife, trolling for hookers on a company cell phone, and his act of contrition was going to Liberty and telling a bunch of church folks that he didn't "honor his wife enough".

I guess we can cut him some slack, though. I never thought he'd be back in the SEC, or any power conference. But I'd lay good odds that Bobby Petrino will be back in Fayetteville next Fall as HC. Never say never.

If FSU was in better shape Deion would totally take that job. His ego fits perfectly in the mold of someone who thinks they can do what hasn't been done. He will wait out for FSU job though. It will be either this year or next and he will be back home.

I agree. Expectations at Colorado when he went there were pretty low. At Auburn, it is a pressure cooker because you have to play Alabama every year and a smattering of top 25 SEC teams the rest of the time.
Personally, I believe when his sons have left Boulder, I suspect Coach Prime will leave as well, either to the NFL or to Tallahassee or home.
I would like to see him back on NFL Network doing the Sunday evening highlights. He was really funny there (but I suspect those days are over).

Agreed. Food poisoning is convenient. Unfortunately I think something else is going on. Love seeing him lose, but don't wish health issues on him. Stress is a huge precursor that leads to much more serious issues. He is dealing with a booster group and fan base that is cultish and crazy to put it mildly. Crazy has a PHD in making you crazy...

He has found his knack in college. His celebrity influences and HOF's walking the sidelines allows him to pull recruits that he normally would not be able to get. In the NFL he would not have that advantage. The only appealing thing the NFL gives is MUCH LESS WORK. Most people don't realize the amount of year round work that major CFB encompasses. You never get a break. NFL coaches are golfing and spending time with friends and family in the offseason. College coaches are recruiting.

His misery started last season when it looked like they might have a winning record but the embarrassing loss to New Mexico State and then the 4th and 31 conversion by Bama changed all that. Seems like things have been miserable for Auburn ever since.

If Colorado keeps winning Deion is going to get a bigger job. I have some issues with what Deion has said/done off the field but Colorado is clearly a solid team under him and has improved a good bit this year. I do think he aims for the FSU job though
