Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Someone mentioned earlier that they hope it ends well. The way it (from the perspective of Hurts) will end primarily rests on Hurts and his family. If there’s silence it has a chance to play out well.

Someone else mentioned earlier that if CNS, commentators, etc. has the right to express their opinions JH and his family have that right also. Everyone has a right to express themselves... but they also have the right to be punished for exercise of that “right”. When you’re fighting for a job on the field, better be careful when you exercise that “right”.

Some have also mentioned statements being dissected. When you are vague with comments, you allow that to occur. For instance, when JH said a “narrative” had been created, he could have clearly stated who was guilty of doing it. Failure to identify that party leaves it open to all manner of discussion.

All of this, however, is immaterial. Jalen’s father got it right - he created the situation because of his play on the field. He has now created a firestorm because of his comments. At some point, you’ve got to stop creating the problems of you ever expect to regain a lost position.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

There is a piece on ESPN today discussing Hurts comments but its subscription only.

The summary is similar to what has been said here. Basically, according to their sources CNS, Enos and Locksley have all talked to both QBs throughout the process and "sometimes, kids hear or don't hear what they want to."

They also said that the feeling at Alabama is that Hurts was trying to put the situation in CNS's lap to see how he would respond. But CNS isn't going to let anything that is said or isn't said push him to make a rash decision. He wants to see this competition play out. They also have quotes from former players and other coaches basically saying that it seems very unlikely that CNS hasn't told Hurts and Tua what's up based on the way CNS has handled previous QB competitions, player concerns, etc

Of course everyone has a right to say whatever they wish and they have a responsibility to bear the consequences when they create problems that weren't there. I think Jalen didn't really think there would be a genuine competition and he would still be the QB and now he's bitter about the whole thing because he see's he can't possibly play at Tua's level. Now he's blown everything up, created possible distractions for the team and Coach is now expected tp explain and answer Jalens comments/accusations about communication, and on top of that there's a team meeting to discuss it. A team meeting can go any number of ways. As far as I'm concerned Jalen should resign from the team for this season, but if he wants to stay he should be in Coach Saban's office profusely apologizing and asking forgiveness, and then apologize publicly to the team and coaches via social media.

I think that you have had a few other QB transfers who had the same problem, and it is not limited to football players. Most people, but young people more so, hear what they want or need to hear rather than what is actually being said. That is why, when I need to make an important point with my boys, I have them say back to me what I just communicated to them, but in their own words. Some times we have to go through this a few times before we have really connected.

Unfortunately, I think the ship has sailed with Jalen, too bad because he has contributed a lot to the program.
As Jordan Rogers said, he looks like a guy who has lost confidence. Add in a negative attitude and that isn’t a good combination.
Tua’s family seems to be much less reactive and more professional about handling their business. From a distance it appears they have raised Tua to be humble, hope he stays that way.

With regard to Jalen's comments about the coaches not asking him about how he felt. What's there to "feel"? Any athlete in his right mind would know the heat is on and his job is in severe jeopardy. We weren't inside the locker room but there's no doubt that around the aTm game (when it's now been disclosed that the staff and the team knew who the better qb was) Jalen knew he was on shaky ground. If we saw signs of player frustration on the sidelines during games. There's no way anyone can tell me Jalen didn't know it for 100% certain inside the locker room. As an athlete you just know. You shouldn't have to have someone tell you "Hey, you need to tighten it up." Trust me, you KNOW. We know CNS told both players there would be an open competition. What else is there needed to discuss? Why do "feelings" need to be discussed?

Mr. Hurts got 1000% right when he said Jalen caused this by his play on the field. Execute and the guy behind you stays on the bench. Start slipping up and the backup begins to warmup. Keep slipping up and you're the one holding the clipboard. That's how sports work. It has nothing to do with feelings. But execution.

But isn't that an NCAA rule that to transfer you have to sit a year?

FWIW, if Jalen wants to transfer before graduation, I doubt CNS would agree to him transferring to another NCAA school.

This squares with what I know. I hate that Jalen felt this flap was necessary. It helped no one...

Not sure...... you see how the Maurice Smith debacle turned out........if Jalen wanted to go to another SEC school, they would probably allow it

Coaches lose their ability to block transfers as of 10/15/'18...

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Earle, do you think he stays on the team through December? What does your gut tell you?
Yes, when all's said and done, I think he does. The way things are going now, I think he plays in only four games and preserves his two years of eligibility...

You are taking all the fun out of this.
