Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

What if Tua just plays in the 4 most important games and redshirts? Lol

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I fully expect Jalen to start, although I'd prefer Tua. At the same time, I think it's possible to make too much of the choice of starter. I think Jalen will be given one final opportunity to show that he can - or can't - handle distributing the ball in an efficient manner and space will develop between the two. When it's clear that Tua will get the bulk of the snaps, I think Jalen's redshirt will be preserved...

Blake Barnett says hi.
Whoever takes the first snap doesn’t really mean much, in the overall scheme of things. One series at the beginning of the game will not, IMO, determine the outcome of the game.

Nebraska RS FR QB Gebbia wasn’t named the starter, he dropped out of school today leaving the huskers with one scholarship QB

times are changing, especially with highly rated QBs.

I care immensely about who takes the first step because it sends a message to all the recruits out there.

Chill out. I don't think we will see recruiting drop at all based on who starts. It's who finishes that counts. Trust the Process and the greatest coach of all time.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I'm not sure about it, but from what I've read, Lousiville doesn't have a very good defense, so I expect he'll have decent stats.

They don’t and he will have better stats than that, or he may not play much more at Bama.
Cardinal defense is probably as bad as any BCS defense Bama will play this year. Van Gorder won’t help as they lack both experience and depth, and were bad last year. (62nd total defense)

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Not many people really have confidence in Jalen against the teams you have to beat to win it all. He could start and look good against Louisville. Tua needs the work to develop in game type situations before the hard games, although reading about Louisville scares me a bit. Their D will be better than we expect I suspect. Tua seems the clear choice to be a great offense, but CS is like CPB, he makes the decision his way. They are the best ever, but doesn't mean their decisions were always right. Their leadership and development of players and a team put them above everybody else. The auburn game last year is what is so troubling about seeing Jalen get the start. Having said that, I do not expect him to start. Just cannot see it.

I’ve read A LOT about Louisville’s defense (both this year and last), and Van Gorder is a journeyman for a reason. Just curious to know what you read that makes you think they’ll be better than last year.

Honestly, I don't expect the loser of this qb battle to play much more (as in more than 4 games) at Alabama, in any event.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Were there no leaks from practice today? I thought maybe there would be one source who would say which QB was taking the majority of snaps with the 1's today.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Amen to that. Stidham is so much better than Hurts that it may counter our other advantages. Two in a row to Auburn would not be good.

Amen to that. Some folks say they are ok with losing to Auburn if we make it to the playoffs anyway. I kind of wish I were wired that way but I am not.

I’ll never be “OK” with losing to the Barn - west Georgia it may be, but Alabama mailing address it has.
Since Bama would never consistently lose to the Barn and win the NC, I can stomach a one-off, but definitely not multiple repeats.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I think CNS (no, I do not have any inside info or intel to prove it) has already talked to these two young men about the plan for this weekend and this weekend and next weekend are the final auditions. I don't think it hurts Bama recruiting to take the qb battle into the first two games. If it goes much longer than that it could (at certain skill positions) hurt some but I don't think CNS will let that happen.
I don't have a problem with both QBs playing early in this game. Let them so we can see who spreads the ball around and makes better reads and decisions and see who the team plays better for. Then the debate is over and no one can accuse CNS of throwing any of his players under the bus.
Imagine the spouting off from the Hurts family ( I know, it shouldn't matter but perception can hurt you regardless of how untrue that perception may be) should coach just put Tua in and away we go and just put Jalen on the bench. Plus, some recruits might view that in a negative light.
Let the world see who the better qb is and go from there.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

If we had won last year we would have gone one up in the series, post Bryant.

Yep. I remember Saban was asked once about how he was able to continue to recruit top ranked players when the roster has so much talent. He said he basically told players he was recruiting “best players play and if you’re one of the best, you’re going to play” but also would ask them “what is the ultimate goal? Isn’t it to be the best player you can be and be the best person you can be? Every player I recruit wants to play in the NFL and that is a great goal. But you aren’t even eligible for the draft for THREE years. Why not come to a place that gives you the best chance to develop in THREE years.”

I understand players, especially the top talent, are very competitive and want to be on the field. I imagine many of these in high school played early and didn’t have to be “patient” in terms of “waiting your turn or paying your dues”.

It is a different world.

It was one of the reasons I was so happy to see Blake Sims finally get the chance to play QB at Alabama and be successful. No player deserved that opportunity any more than Blake. He had been the consummate team player and had done everything he had been asked to do. For the same reason, I have a special place in my heart for Ronnie Clark.

Well, for Bobby P it was probably a no brainer. He had to have someone cheap to fill the required coaching position and BVG could be had on the cheap and everyone knows Bobby P don't give two flips about defense so it's all good.

Seemed to stray from that last year and I don't think it's just a coincidence that our recruiting was the worst it's been in years. When the top wide receiver in your state wants nothing to do with you, that can't be good.

Last year’s recruiting class (a pathetic top six class) was down because of multiple things, not because of Jalen.

Was just watching something on ESPiN wit Gmac and Spears and Damien H was on and they asked about the qb battle and DH said this quite a bit better than I probably could have: "What people don't realize is that all positions are in competition and not just the QB position. I'm glad he said that.

That's a matter of opinion, but it's a fact that Justyn Ross made negative comments about Alabama's offense. I'd have to find it, but I remember reading it.

edit: I think the primary causes of the relatively poorer class (by recent alabama standards) were the lack of recruiting prowess of some coaches that are now gone, and that Saban was surprised that so many players committed during the early signing period last year. Our coaches won't be surprised this time. That'll get fixed.
