Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

even if so, it's not his fault. hopefully we get it worked out as to who is clearly the #2 QB in due time. if you are going to play the best players, then in my eyes the only competition we have is for 2nd string..

I'm hopeful that Jalen is out of the rotation. At this point, he is impeding the development of our other QB's.

i see a little aaron rogers with the ability to extend plays yet still see downfield. Very close in size also

Going further back in time, Fran Tarkenton is the guy Tua reminds me of. An innate ability to avoid the rush while still knowing where every man was on the field.

Tua reminds me of a mix between Russell Wilson and Brett Favre, he plays that wild style like Brett but with the efficency and the running style of Russ.

Jalen DID make a couple of great throws however.

He did?

I remember two good throws:

1. The backshoulder throw to convert on a 3rd with a blitzer in his face was a very good throw. Probably his best of the night.

2. He scrambled, again I think on 3rd down, and kept his eyes up and completed a pass for a first down.

But he had plenty of other throws that were typical Jalen. The receiver was open and he just flat out was inaccurate. And he about got Smith killed on that slant that he threw was too high. Smith almost made a great catch, but he also left the game for a few plays to get checked out.

To be fair, I'll give credit on a few good throws, but I saw nothing that makes me think he should be getting meaningful reps/series in upcoming games. IMO, he adds nothing that Tua can't already do and do much better.

That's brutal, but it's the truth, and Jalen knows it. His parents? Preseason, it would be another story altogether. After yesterday's events, only a blind man or a mother could fail to see the truth.

The reality is harsh but you have to do what is best for the team. I like Jalen but it's time to face facts about his ability to throw the ball.

Harsh, but correct.

At this point Mac deserves a shot at 2nd team.

Agreed. In this offense, Jones' abilities as a passer are at least as good as Jalen's. He is light-years behind in running, and won't ever get remotely close on that front. Which outweighs which, in this offense will be interesting.

The new SEC shorts video is out. I saw it on Facebook and it’s pretty good... about Tua. Not sure how to link it on here right now though.

The third down pass to Smitty that was behind him and almost on the ground?

I remember a back shoulder throw that appeared more on the underthrown pass side of the spectrum.

Just can’t recall anything to show improvement, which is sad since he clearly is trying.

Believe his parents still haven’t seen what everyone else has.

Truth. Hurts was fortunate the receiver there was able to get turned around.

I do think Jalen improved marginally, but not nearly enough - not even enough to hold off Mac Jones.

I appreciate everything Hurts did for the team, but it is crystal clear that he has been surpassed by at least one other QB.

Don't think it was that one. Probably in the second half when he was playing. He scrambled, rolled to the right, kept his head up and instead of trying to run for it he threw a short pass for a completion and first down.

And that one was called back due to holding. And Waddle was open over the middle, but Jalen bailed out too soon and never saw him.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I have a feeling Tua is going to be on the other end of comparisons for a long time to come, but that arm/release reminds me of Joe Namath.
When I first watched Tua play last season I had the same thought, his fast release immediately reminded me of watching Joe Namath. Of course his dual threat ability is something Joe Willie never had and his knee injury made it even harder for him to move around in his pro career.

There was one play where the running back (can't remember who) came out of the backfield and blew by his defender and Jalen missed him because he imagined pressure and scooted outside for a short gain. He cannot see the open guy. That would have been a touchdown every time. No one was within 5-10 yards of the guy!
