This ranks right up there with "but the only reason our schedule was weak in 1966 is because Georgia Tech left the conference and we were FORCED to play La Tech!" Aside from the fact the newspapers at the time of the schedule fluff pointed out it wasn't La Tech that replaced Ga Tech, it was USM (as I documented in my write-up on the thing), the overall Bama schedule wasn't that strong that year.2) Georgia had Oklahoma on the schedule only for at last minute for the SEC to force them to cancel. It’s not like they had many takers to choose from for a replacement
And part of that - yes - was because of segregation. Some teams refused to play SEC teams until they integrated.
I hate anyone to think I'm defending UGA (I cringe), but as I said so many times when we were criticized for our schedule - "scheduling is a two-way street." UGA can't just call up Washington or Michigan or USC and say, "Hey, how about an opener at a neutral site like Dallas to start 2023?"
