I'm not getting into the debate over whether chanting "USC" is classless or not. But the rest of the nation can see our reputation is in tatters. That is to say, they see our rep as being tattered and torn. Of course we don't see it that way. But I don't believe chanting or not chanting is going to affect our national image right now.
I was not discussing our national reputation, but that too has taken a hit lately.

next time ill get your permission before i chant. what do you think people would find more offensive, the usc chant or the rammer jammer? thanks for reminding me on how to be a 'good' fan at ball games
No need....if you want to act like a barner and be their equal rather than their superior go right ahead. I will still view it as classless.

Oh please. You can step down off your pedistal now.
It's spelled pedestal. I can see how someone in the gutter can think someone on level ground is on a pedestal though. ;) It is fine if you want to be the equivilent of a barner.

Let's end the classless debate with this:

I posted it on the basketball board, but it needs to be repeated here. Some friends of mine were at the game, and they went down to the announce tables to listen to the post game show. An Auburn student had a sign that read "1983", as in the year Coach Bryant died. Needless to say, my friends were both ticked off and stunned.

A friend of mine(I think it was Tidehead) made the comment that we would never stoop so low as to bring a sign with the year someone like Jim Fyfe or Tommy Joe Eagles died.
I heard a lot of jokes from Bama fans about fyffe after his death. I found that classlessness exists on both sides as evidenced by this thread. My point is that Bama is better than this.

no school or team or organization or club or anything has truly classy fans....all teams have fans that boo the other team, rub it in when they win, make excuses when they lose, secretly laugh (sometimes not secretly) when a star player for the other team gets injured, cry about poor officiating, talk bad about their coaches, players and team when they do stupid things and retaliate in some way when the aforementioned is done to them....some fans moreso than others

and don't say that it's pride because that can be an argument for both sides....all teams have classless fans, all teams have classy fans....and (perish the thought) 'Bama is no different

we have all been classless at one point or another, some more than others....I have seen many fans from many teams and I can say with relative assurance that if you are a fan of a particular team you will have tendencies during games to be "classless" (which I've yet to see a definition of)

that being said, I would have chanted "USC, USC, USC" as loud as I possibly could have, I have chanted "overrated" more than once, I boo at almost every game I attend and I like to taunt some people that have allegiances other than my own, and I chanted "Roll Tide, Roll Tide" when Mike Price and UTEP played at La. Tech this year....but I can also take the taunting that others do to me

if this makes me classless then I guess I am but before we go on a big whoop-de-do "let he who is without blame cast the first stone"
At least you are honest in you recognition that this makes you no better than a barner or a vile. I can respect that.

Exactly my sentiments. I dish it out, but I can definitely take it. Yeah, I was one of the ones who got p!ssed off when minnesota played rocky top, but on some deep, sick level I thought "D@mn. That was ballsy, and a pretty good little stunt on their part. Wish we were ballsy sometimes..."

I know there are several of you who have inaugurated yourselves the class police, but give us (the students) a break. There is something that just makes us so incredibly happy when we sing the Rammer Jammer or taunt the other team or cut out hundreds of pieces of yellow fabric to wave when we think there has been a penalty. We think we're funny. We laugh at ourselves. Some people laugh with us. Others get p!ssed off and cry. We call those who get p!ssed "grumpy". Those who laugh with us lead a much happier existence, and possibly weigh less. Everyone knows that laughing burns calories.

{yeah, this is my opinion, but i like being sarcastic. so don't get all offended. please.}
And I have my opinion too. I guess it because it differs from yours, though, that I shhould not express it without being labeled "Class Police" right? I have not once said people should not do it. I simply opined that I thought it was classless.

As for taunting others, I don't like it anymore when fans do it than when players do it on the field. As Coach Bryant used to tell us, "when you get in the endzone, act like you have been there before." That, however, is just my opinion.

Always remember....

...college athletics without the emotion (which includes taunting - as long as you don't use potty mouth or do physical harm) becomes the bland thing known as professional athletics. The day college athletics becomes unemotional is the day I realize that it's time to check out. It's one thing to claim to have class, and not do things like taunt. But then there is a fine line between being called "old fogies who just sit on their hands" and creating an electric atmosphere where the best athletes want to play because it gives them chill bumps. Unfortunately, creating that electric atmosphere usually involves a liitle taunting in the process. I'll take taunting anyday, especially when it includes a healthy rendition of Rammer Jammer. If you were in Jordan Hare in 1999 when we took our first victory there, and you sang Rammer Jammer at the end of the game like I did, and you did not almost have an "out of body" experience doing it, then you miss out on what I get doing it, and I feel for you. My father-in-law, who is an Auburn fan and was already at his car about 1/4 mile away from the stadium said he couldn't believe how loud we were singing. If that's taunting, well I'm guilty, and proud of it. RTR!

There is no dignity in losing. VANDY has all sorts of class and dignity, but they are LOSERS. The TIDE reputation is in tatters simply because we have not had a winning season recently. When that changes, so will the tide tradition. As for the chanting of USC, I would have done it had I been there, for two reasons, one is that to make up fake titles is about as classless as you can get, and two because Auburn is the enemy, Its not my job to make their life nice and cozy, and I don't expect any praise from them either. None of the SEC schools have held their punches one little bit during this decade of dispair, and I am waiting patiently to turn the table on each and every one of them.

Respect comes from fear, Not table manners.

Show class, have pride and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself. - Coach Bryant

If a laundromat in Tuscaloosa wants to award us the National Title, I'll take it. - Coach Bryant

no laundromat has named auburn national champs tho...

i agree with bamaslammer..

coach bryant also had a quote about the "cow college"...being auburn university.....so bamalaw92 does that make coach bryant a classless man?

I suspect you get the point.

That is your right

No it doesn't and here is why. Coach Bryant said,"Sure I'd like to beat Notre Dame, don't get me wrong. But nothing matters more than beating that cow college on the other side of the state." He said it to a group of boosters, not the media or to Auburn. The media picked up on it and widely reported it. Auburn used it as fuel to defeat Alabama. Bryant regretted saying it. He was not classless, but he was a man.

oh okay i get it now, since i dont act like YOU that makes me a barner? nah dude im not too uptight to worry about some petty chant at a ballgame that pretty much meant nothing. say what you will but i drove two hours down there and will chant whatever i want when i want and cant nobody say im not a true bama fan. let us know around football season what is okay to chant and what is not.

No it is the fact that you act like abarner that makes you on equal footing with them. I never said you were a barner, just no better.

You can still be a true Alabama fan and have no class. Say what you will, but I go to all the games I can go to and I can voice my opinion just as loudly as you can voice yours. That makes me no more uptight than you. You are free to chant and act like a fool and a barner all you like. As I said, I am not preventing anyone from doing it, but at least be honest about what you are doing and don't try to justify it as somehow different from all the other classless acts other schools do. It is your perogative to make a fool of yourself. Let me know when it is okay to voice opinions that you don't agree with.

Your posts make you sound like an elitist, superior snob. Just my opinion.

I agree!

I was there and did not chant "USC". I found it as classless as Minnesota playing "Rocky Top". We are Alabama...there is no need to belittle our inferiors.

I agree. I was there when Minnesota played "Rocky Top" after they won, and I thought of it as down right trashy. I thought to myself "Alabama would never do a thing like that." When people hear of the University of Alabama, they think of class; we need to prove that they are right and we don't stoop down to the levels of others. We would be hippocrits to call Minnesota classless and then turn around a do the same thing in return.
