Why leave the Auburn with a lake to go to the Auburn without a lake and with Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and LSU in the back yard? Dabo may be dumb, but he ain't that dumb.
I’m not sure if this was already covered but Brent Venables also very recently said that he wasn’t going to leave Clemson (in light of Auburn reaching out to him for their HC spot)

Rob Pate was lighting up the PTB on 3 Man Front today. Even called by name Rane and Harbert. Said he didn’t blame the people backing out. “I would too and hell I played there.”
I heard that interview. It was very interesting. It would make me furious if I was an AU fan.

2 things

One of the main reasons programs fire coaches like Malzahn is simply hope. Everyone has a good idea of the outcome of the AU/CGM marriage - they've seen it for 7 years. But AU/??? is a mystery, even if the coach does not appear as good as Gus on the surface, maybe, just maybe the AU/??? marriage will produce magic. But this is the same for all programs and their fan bases. I remember when Shula was hired, I was concerned about his drive, being born to privilege, the son of a great NFL coach, etc., thus, his drive was greater than it seemed. So, I said to myself and others, well maybe he wants to make a name for himself, make his own path in this world, etc. There was the unknown for a period, a sense of mystery and thus, hope. Not surprisingly it did not materialize - he turned out just like one who would employ reason by looking at his past, would think. "But Alabama is a special place,...,..." It is, but it only helps so much.

Thing 2. Most likely the reason that AU has such a hard time hiring a big name coach, they've never done it, is that they must have excessive control because of recruiting tactics (Wayne Hall, Garner, et al.). Most coaches want no part of that, certainly not successful coaches. Those same "recruiting tactics " may also be why there has been inexplicable success from 5-19 Chizik, Samford's Terry Bowden, and others. All of this assuming that the charges of AU's over-the-top recruiting ways are true. I do not know.

It's not even that. They just fired a guy who has had more success against us than anyone else in the SEC.
It is a head scratcher, here are the head coaches to beat Saban in the SEC since 2008:

TeamCoachW-LWin%
USCeSteve Spurier1-1.500
Ole MissHugh Freeze2-3.400
AuburnGus Malzahn3-5.375
AuburnGene Chizik1-3.250
LSUEd Ogeron1-3.250
LSULes Miles2-8.250
Texas A&MKevin Sumlin1-5.200

The sample size is too small on USCe so that is an outlier. Next coach was buying players. Gus just got fired with a record of beating Bama at a better clip than any other coach. This doesn’t even cover all the coaches who remain winless against him.

What if Auburn already has a home run hire telling them he is coming, but he wants to wait until after Bowl season is over. What if they are smoke screening with this search. What if it is Dabo?
What if Kate Upton and Mila Kunis showed up to my apartment for a 3 way?
What if I started pooping gold?
What if Bill Gates decided to give all his money to me?
All of those 3 things are more likely to happen than coach Karen aweshucks going to auburn
