Re: Jeremy Elder arrested.

Wow, tell us how you really feel. :)

Horrible mistake by this young man. Hopefully he can take his punishment like a man and learn from this. Football is the least of his worries at the moment.
I'm sorry, it just really ticks me off that someone with that great of a future would throw it away for absolutely NOTHING. It was a mistake yes, but a mistake that is probably gonna cost him his future. I don't care if he ever played football, just the fact that someone is that dumb is what ticks me off. Mistakes are one thing.. Armed robbery is another.

Ok, let's assume that he is now off the team. Am I correct in thinking that if CNS gives his scollie to another incoming FR, that counts towards the 25 for the 2008 class or is it just toward the 85?

Just the 85, because Elder was a part of the 2007 recruiting class.

His loss -- had it occurred a couple of months earlier -- would have created another scholarship for a early-enroll guy who could count as a back-counter to the 2007 class, like Chris Jackson and Corey Smith.

Considering when it occurred, it only counts to the 85.

What would CPB do? nothing, because I don't believe JE would have been on one of his teams. Character, and he could spot it.

My understanding:
Any new (scholarship) player that signed with us this month will count toward the 25. We can't bring in more than 25 of those 32 signees, no matter how many of the 85 scholarships are vacated. If we didn't have 25 open slots available (i.e., if we had more than 60 returning scholarship players from the 2007 team), then any player that leaves the program before the fall will vacate one of the 85 and would therefore make more room to fit the 25 new guys in.

If we had less than 60 players returning from last year's team (let's say there were only 57 guys left on scholarship), then kicking a current player off the team isn't going to open up any slot for a new signee. In that case we would have 57 + 25 = 82 total scholarship players and 3 open scholarships that could be awarded to walk-ons, etc. Those three "extra" scholarships could not be given to one of the new signees from this past signing day if that would push the total number of players coming in above the 25 limit.

Re: Jeremy Elder arrested.

Exactly!
Plus, Scooter, if you think two charges of armed robbery will net 2-3 years of jail time, I've got an igloo in Arizona to sell you. Spend much time in the real world, do ya?
I've seen UA cops harassing innocent people just walking through the campus onmany occasions. I've seen them stop cars around the stadium because of the ethnicity of the driver (mind you, there could be circumstances I wasn't aware of in those instances). I myself have been harassed at DCH by UA cops for parking in the ED entrance (I have to park there because I haul medicine down there in the evening and that is the only entracne open). While they may be trained law enforcement, that still doesn't mean they have the right to essentially terrorize anyone they see fit to.

As for the jail time, I was talking about time ACTUALLY served. I work in a law firm and see criminal court records everyday. If he pleads out he'll be sentenced to 15-20 years, but he will probably have ten years or so suspended and he'll be paroled after 3 years if he behaves himself.

Re: Jeremy Elder arrested.

I was glad to see that CNS has already suspended Elder indefinitely. This shows we take these situations seriously and should the evidence conclude that Mr. Elder was not guilty of these crimes then he can be welcomed back to the team.

The very fact that the suspension came less than 12 hours following the arrest shows how serious CNS and the rest of the staff at Alabama are about enforcing the rules.

Well, we all seem to marvel at Sabans' ability to judge character also. I don't think Saban saw this coming last Feb when he signed JE, no more than Bryant could have predicted it if he were still here.

You say they were stopped because of the ethnicity of the driver? Yet you say
"mind you, there could be circumstances I wasn't aware of in those instances.." No kidding.

UAPD has no jurisdiction at DCH. DCH employs (or did) Wackenhut Security not UAPD officers. Perhaps you should talk to DCH Security about parking arrangements for deliveries. :BigA:

Re: Jeremy Elder arrested.

What is the point of this statement?
seems like the poster is implying that CPB could recognize kids with character issues and thus would have never signed Jeremy. My guess is the proof is that CPB never had any kids get out of line since he could spot bad seeds a mile away. Well, except for Joe Willy, and the father of a recent former very popular QB....but other than them, nobody ever did anything out of line.

No offense to anyone, but why does it matter what Coach Bryant would do? Paul Bryant is not the coach at the University of Alabama now, Nick Saban is. The fact of the matter is, this is a different time we are living in. People seem to be worse now then they were back then, for whatever reason. It doesn't matter who recruited him, Shula or Saban, the kid did something wrong and he has to pay the price of his actions.

I completely agree. My post was more than slightly tongue-in-cheek, and my suspicion is that the post "what would Bear do", was too.

Re: Jeremy Elder arrested.

Saban's hands are probably tied on this matter. I hate it for Coach because he's probably at his lakehouse in Georgia trying to relax and he gets hit with this just when he winds down some.

It could be a case of mistaken identity (UA cops are just one step up from mall secruity guards) but if Elder really did this he'll serve at least 2-3 years actual prison time, in addition to probation, fines, restitution, etc etc.
Speaking of Campus Police, those guys are a trip. Last year the day before the A-Day game we are at The Bryant Museum when one of the well fit officers come up eating while talking to us. We had already been in the museum but left to eat BBQ. The lady from the museum stamped our hands so we could return. We return but he the officer would not let my family and I come back into the museum. The director (Nice Lady) came out and let us back in and ask him what he thought he was doing. Now we did have the Stamp of Approval.

My son said, "if I run he would never catch me."

Re: Jeremy Elder arrested.

If he is guilty, he will not be on the team very long. Completely unacceptable way to represent the team and University. Pulling a gun is never acceptable, but this ain't a bar fight we're talking about. This is a 6'4" 270 pound beast pulling a weapon on two random individuals to rob them...completely unprovoked. Anybody in the great position he is to have a football career shouldn't be making decisions like that. This isn't a kid "needing help", the only thing Elder is needing is some intelligence. D1 athletes should have no motivation to do these things...it may have effectively ended his professional career chances before even playing a down.
