LGBTQ Issues: Will We Choose Love and Acceptance or Hate and Oppression? (Part 2)

Interesting analysis of Sotomayor's dissent in the recent Department of State v. Muñoz decision:

The Supreme Court dealt a blow to the fundamental rights of married couples on Friday in an important and ominous immigration case, Department of State v. Muñoz. Justice Amy Coney Barrett held—over the dissent of all three liberals—that American citizens have no constitutional “liberty interest” in living with their foreign spouses, denying them the most basic protections against arbitrary government discrimination. Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s fierce dissent condemned Barrett’s opinion as, among other things, an unsubtle assault on marriage equality for LGBTQ+ Americans.

Well, this ruling affects a lot of Germans and Koreans who have come to Alabama on work visas to work in the automotive industry who married American citizens while here.

So what happens to all those marriages?

What about family values?

Interesting analysis of Sotomayor's dissent in the recent Department of State v. Muñoz decision:

President Joe Biden is pardoning US veterans who were convicted by the military over a 60-year period under a military law that banned gay sex, three US officials told CNN.

In a statement on Wednesday, Biden said he was “righting an historic wrong” by pardoning service members “who were convicted simply for being themselves.”

“Our nation’s service members stand on the frontlines of freedom, and risk their lives in order to defend our country. Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. … This is about dignity, decency, and ensuring the culture of our Armed Forces reflect the values that make us an exceptional nation,” he said.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but laugh at Clinton’s defense that oral sex wasn’t real sex. I wonder if that point of view ever came up in the military when they were kicking people out because they had gay sex.

Chris was the first person I met when we moved to Milan. He's a super nice guy and as far as I know was a good mayor. Unfortunately, like many, he doesn't understand what racism is, and that misunderstanding has cost him a political career. There was no monetary or physical damage, so what's the harm.....right? It's a shame and I sincerely hate it for him, but he's brought this on himself by not being sensitive to what racism consists of.

This is the article I meant to link in the above post.

"an appointed member of the Human Rights Commission who was made Vice Chairman of the group"

Tell me if you've heard this one before: older white CIS guy appointed to a position to represent non older CIS white people doesn't understand any other subgroup besides older white CIS guys and denigrates anyone he doesn't understand...

Seemingly we can't move on to a more productive society, state, country, or world until these kinds of unqualified appointments and ignorant/harmful attitudes are addressed and corrected (and in every year going forward).

With that said, clearly this kind of attitude is baked into our DNA somehow and probably will never be fully eradicated.

Speaking of obsessions...

No judgment. It's just weird to publicly hate something and privately love it so much.

It's also weird to be so afraid of people just wanting to be themselves, especially for those with a libertarian bent.

And for those who believe strongly in parental rights it's weird to not let them make medical decisions for their children.

And for those who believe in conscience protections for medical providers it's weird to believe medical providers should be jailed for meeting the needs of their child or adult patients.

Same applies to medical autonomy for patients.

My county is between the red and pink in every chart.

In Musk's mind protecting children from non-supportive and abusive parents is "an attack on families" so he's moving his companies to Texas, where a woman has to be on death's door to get a life-saving abortion and certainly not one to preserve her physical health and they deny children and parents medical care.

The CEO of the rocket manufacturer appeared to reference a piece of legislation that California's Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law on Monday—AB 1955 also known as Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today's Youth (SAFETY) Act.

The law aims to prohibit "school districts from enacting forced outing policies" of students with regard to their gender identity, provide "resources for parents and students to manage conversations about gender and identity privately" and protect "teachers and school staff from retaliation if they refuse to forcibly out a student," according to a statement by Assemblymember Chris Ward who introduced the legislation.

Posting on X, Musk suggested that the law was an attack on families in the state.

Vance has also echoed false tropes increasingly used by conservatives to describe LGBTQ people and those who support them as “groomers.”

“I’ll stop calling people ‘groomers’ when they stop freaking out about bills that prevent the sexualization of my children,” Vance said on social media in April 2022.

GLAAD wrote in its post about Vance’s record: “There is no evidence that discussing LGBTQ people, history or families in schools ‘sexualizes’ anyone. Experts in child sexual abuse say false rhetoric about grooming diminishes understanding about actual abuse and endangers all children.”

An Alabama public library mistakenly added a children’s picture book to a list of potentially inappropriate titles because the author’s last name is “Gay,” the library’s director said.

“Read Me a Story, Stella,” a children’s picture book by Canadian author Marie-Louise Gay, was added to a list of books flagged for potential removal from the children’s section of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library because of “sexually explicit” content.

But the book, which is about a pair of siblings reading together and building a dog house, should not have been on the list and was only added because of the keyword “gay,” Cindy Hewitt, the library’s executive director told AL.com on Sunday.

My MIL is a public librarian back in AL.

She has had to pull the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" from the shelves and place it behind the counter so that only adults can access it.

Due to a change in policy for library funding in AL, libraries will have to pull books deemed "inappropriate for children".

This is simple censorship.

This is happening across conservative states.

A bill failed this year in AL that would criminalize librarians and a new bill with supposedly clarified language has been filed for 2025.

This issue (republican censorship) should probably get its own thread.

It seems like Elon is irate because one of his kids is transgender. He blames the public schools for "causing" this. Thus, he wants to move both SpaceX and Twitter HQs out of the state.

He is a real odd duck, incredibly successful. But at the same time full of himself. (I tried to be clean with the latter statement!)

Musk is a moron.
