I really don't see anything wrong with calling those FG's that we missed. They didn't score off of the change of possession and you guys are jumping on the staff for trying to get points. Same with the Maze pass play. Had we got the catch it would have been a genius call. You folks amaze me!
I didnt have a problem with trying the first two. But by the time we kicked the one that got blocked, it was clear that LSU couldnt put together a sustained drive against us. LSU was comfortable playing field position. That was a perfect opportunity to flip the script on them.

Our coaches panicked and theirs didn't. We got cute and they stuck to the plan. That's all it was. Nothing more, nothing less. They allowed us to self destruct and didn't get in our way.
Bingo.

Really? With that defense? I would bet a month's salary that if we change just 2 of those FG attempts to punts and take back the Maze pass, we win the game. Call me conservative if you want, but you'd also have to call me a winner.
You could be just as right as me, or I could be just as wrong as you! I guess we will never know. :)

Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

I have two questions, but before I ask them let me say that I love CNS and hope he stays at Bama until the day he dies...
2. How come we can't get a difference maker at QB? For all of Saban's recruiting prowess, we have never had a top-notch guy at the most critical position on the field.
we get them and we have them in aj and philip. but they are not difference makers because saban freaks out on them anytime they try to do anything other than play it safe. you dont "win them" all by playing it safe. when aj laid down in overtime on third down i think it can be directly attributed to the national spanking saban gave him last year. he was more afraid of making a mistake than wanting to win the game. his instincts told him "take the sack" and i am sure as soon as his butt hit the field he said "oh no, we just lost". unfortunately mccarron plays exactly the way saban makes him.

so to answer your question, as long as saban is our coach (and i hope it is for a very long time to come) we will not have a difference maker at quarterback. it just wont happen

They simply had a kicker. We don't. We had our opportunities and never made use of them. Stupid penalties, Bad officiating, bad reads. We just couldn't overcome our own deficiencies.

Well, not to argue, but actually we do know. We lost the game, right? :)
There is absolutely no guarantee that had those "calls" not been made that we would've won. So, no we don't.

How do they have a great kicker. Their FGs were 30, 25, and 19. If we had those we would have won. We kicked a 34 and 46, but missed a 44, 49, 50, 52. How can you even compare what the 2 did in the game.

Perhaps, but I'll just put it this way. With our defense and absolutely no indication all season that we could make those kicks, I'll just say we played against the odds big time and leave it at that. Every call has some risk, but we sure didn't calculate those risks very well tonight in several situations. They were poor decisions. How do I know? Because they didn't work.

I don't question the heart, effort, or anything related to the players on the field tonight. Our guys played a hard fought game and came up short.

However, I do question a lot of the play calling tonight, specifically in key moments. If it's wrong to question decisions made my coaches who make 7 figure to make such decisions, maybe I should stop posting. Like others have said, some of those calls just made no sense, even to someone like me who admittedly knows far less than the average coach. Forgive me for not being a sunshine pumper, but I call it like I see it. Don't send your "short field goal" specialist out for a long field goal when your defense is playing out of its mind and don't put an injured player who can't move laterally out to field a punt.

Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

I don't think it was out coached. We had the FGs, not the coaches fault (well #3 that was blocked maybe). The INT on the 1 wasn't the coaches fault either. They made the plays not us. We had a bone headed block in the back on the INT that was ran down to the 5 - not the coaches fault there. They played hard, D did well. We just didn't finish tonight. We'll be okay.
I don't think that was an interception! It looked to me like a catch with the receiver down and the ball is taken away on the ground after the catch.

Did the replay refs really look closely at that play?

This is one game that Bama should not have lost!

What will be the players mental state for the Mississippi State game? I am concerned about game as well as the Barn. Hopefully, the Defense will be MOTIVATED to excel in both those games.

I do question several play calls inside the LSU 35 yard line.

I am really disappointed for our Defense. They played lights out!

I sure don't want to end up playing BSU!

Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

While it was a very tough loss... I do agree the play calling was questionable.
Although FGs from the mid 40s to 50 yds are never a gimme, any Div 1 kicker worth his mettle should be able to consistently make it TO the goalposts. We had trouble just getting it TO the goalposts, much less making it THROUGH them. The blame doesn't solely lie on the kickers. We had too many penalties, too many bad playcalls.
The only upside is that there actually is a decent shot of a rematch. Stanford still has to play Oregon at Eugene. Ok St still has OU (although they did lose Broyle today). With only Boise St left, I think voters would likely want to see Bama LSU again rather than LSU Boise St... The possibility of a rematch is pretty viable.

There's not a guarantee; but, with the momentum we had at that point, I find it hard to believe that we could not have punched it in from the one with four tries. LSU was on its heels at that point.

I believe the call cost us the game. That said, if you rely on the refs, you're going to lose just about every time. The things we could control, we didn't. We let them hang around and they stole it at the end. Total team loss.

"I thought we ran two real trick plays the whole night. The little reverse in the first quarter when Richardson and I believe Maze tripped each other"

the sooner we stop running that play the better. We ran it 5 times by my count and never got more than 3 yards. like the "shovel pass" in the 80's

Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

sorry to say it, but this one's largely on the coaching staff
Yeah, anyway CNS can play LSU before the bye week since that seems to be the only team he likes losing to after bye weeks? Just a thought... I should go night night

1. When was the last time we beat a team with equal or better talent? It seems if we can't line up and brutalize teams with hat-on-a-hat direct runs with better players, we are in trouble. And it doesn't take a genius to pound teams with superior talent.

2. How come we can't get a difference maker at QB? For all of Saban's recruiting prowess, we have never had a top-notch guy at the most critical position on the field.
1. When we played Florida in SEC championship game in 2009 we beat a team with as good or better talent.
2. Agree with that comment.

I really like the comments that Les made after the game last year and this year. He shows class and even though I do not like LSU very much, I do like him. He always compliments us as a good team and that he would be honored to play us again. Much better than Auburn's head coach, moral victory crap.

I haven't posted in a few years, but I'm still in shock that we won. Of course Bama should have put LSU away...but in the last six minutes coaching staff tightened up and played not to lose instead of playing to win. I'm going to church twice tomorrow. No way this LSU fan wants a rematch.
Good luck with the praying...I prayed during the game and it didn't help us. (By the way, I always go to church)
