Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

In terms of Penn State officials realizing how bad things are, they have already shown they're clueless.
Yeppers.

I can tell you if I was a parent of any kind of athlete that Penn State is recruiting, my child would not be attending that university. This is going to hurt them in myriad ways going forward.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

I am not sure if this is just a case of Paterno "says" he plans to retire at the end of the season or if ths is the PSU approved ending to Paterno's coaching career at PSU. His statement about the child abuse and his intention to retire are just not good enough for me. I don't believe he really gets how terribly wrong his inactions were.

There is a special session of the PSU board of trustees scheduled for Friday with the Gov. of Pennsylvania scheduled to attend. I would hope they will come to the conclusion that Paterno must either resign or be fired immediately. This situation is bigger than Paterno. It is about healing of the abused and PSU moving forward with dignity. Are they going to honor Paterno at his last home game? That would ring hollow and be very disturbing to millions of Americans in my opinion.

The coach initially defended his decision to take the abuse report to his athletic director and not prosecutors. Paterno said it was obvious the graduate student was "distraught," but said he wasn't told about the "very specific actions" in the grand jury report.

After Paterno reported the incident to Curley, Sandusky was told to stay away from the school, but critics say the coach should have done more — tried to identify and help the victim, for example, or alerted authorities.

"I think it's the right thing," Penn State freshman Jake Schur said. "He didn't do what he should have. He's doing the right thing by stepping down to preserve the Penn State football program.

"It's sad to see it happen under such a bad situation but at the same time everyone was sort of preparing themselves for it."

Paterno's requirement that his players not just achieve success but adhere to a moral code, that they win with honor, transcended his sport. Mike Krzyzewski, the Duke basketball coach, said in June for an ESPN special on Paterno: "Values are never compromised. That's the bottom line."

Crazy scene.

We may be football obsessed in the south, but at least we know where our priorities are (most of the time.)

The statement he issued was not sent out from Penn State... meaning it's still wishful thinking on his part that he can finish out the season.

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

He's admitted he was told about this and all he did was what he was legally required to do.

Defend him if you wish, but it appears he simply had you fooled with his 'morality'.

Anyone who wouldn't follow this to it's conclusion is a dirtbag, JoPa included.

I found out a very long time ago that just because something is legal, that doesn't mean it's right, either morally or socially.

The fact that State Penn is dragging it's feet wrt to handling this is beyond disturbing to me.

I think they're going to permanently lose a ton of respect from folks like me based on their inaction.

This is so much worse than Miami, UNC, OSU, etc, and they're acting like they need to find the 'politically expedient' way to handle this.

From Coach Saban:

"I've heard some about the news, but it wouldn't really be appropriate for me to make any comments not having known a lot about it," Saban said. "It's a terrible, sad series of events especially that would lead to someone who's accomplished so much retiring. But I think the most important concern in all of this is for the kids. That would be my utmost concern relative to this circumstance."

Here are Saban's comments when asked to comment about Paterno's retirement and the Penn State scandal:

What I can't understand is how it went on for this long without somebody saying something about it or it getting out in the public. How could it be covered up for this long? Were people paid off?

How did it finally come to light?

This is horrible!

For the same reasons that sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children remains such an ongoing issue in our society and around the world. As much as so many of us Americans like to spout off about valuing human life, many of us will turn a blind eye and a deaf ear when confronted with the actual abuses. It is the rare individual who will actually man up and do the right thing. As you can see in all this at PSU, people will put appearances far above the safety of a child.

I would like to think that this was covered up because of someone being paid off, but unfortunately I believe it was covered up, ignored and denied for far more malignant reasons - shame, apathy and lack of courage.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

Been trying to keep away from posting about this topic but here goes.......... If Joe Pa new about this for so long and did nothing other than "PASS ALONG" the information I have to question his morals, values, principles and priorities. There is NO EXCUSE for him sweeping this issue under the rug for so many years. NONE! I do appreciate his contribution to CFB and the development of so many young men through out his career but to push this aside into the drak corner and hope it just fades away is a ridiculous and unforgiveable action. Personally, I don't know how he slept and lived with himself knowing that one child was violated much less the potential for more to be victims of the Sandusky MONSTER. Friendship loyalty is one thing. Violation of a child, especially in this manner, trumps ANY form of loyalty........ END OF RANT!!!!

He knew. From the grand jury:
Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant's report at his home on a Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called Tim Curley ("Curley"), Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno's immediate superior, to his home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy.

All of the respect I had for that program, University, and JoePa has evaporated.

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

Quite frankly, most people couldn't give a flying flip about how "sad" it will be to see Paterno's career ending right now.

And the silence in regard to McQueary still being employed is sickening as well. We're talking about someone who was witness to a sexual assault and didn't do anything to stop it.

Don't get it twisted. I don't feel any sympathy toward JoePa. I think its sad a man with such a storied coaching career put himself in a position for his career to end in this manner. IMO, his legacy will forever be tarnished (deservedly so) because he chose to turn a blind eye to what was going on. His excuse about reporting it to AD is a crock. That may be ok at a directional FCS school, but not at a top tier BCS school where the Head Coach is the face of the university.

I will repeat that I'm not even sure that he satisfied his legal obligations, not that they will go after him...

I am making a conscious decision to no longer call Paterno, Jo Pa. That to me is a term of endearment that conjures up the image of a lovin grandpa. In my mind that no longer is appropriate. That is sad but true.
