I can't speak for James, but I believe he meant that he took a little relief that his name wasn't on there. I know I think that. And I feel sorry for the ones that are gone. It's a little weird to say, but as you see the ones who you're in touch with, you can almost predict by physical appearance who is going to be going earlier. Not 100%, but it's surprisingly close...

I will be 65 in December. I have a little bit of schadenfreude when I check my high school alumni group on Facebook and find people I knew who were gravely ill or have passed away. Me? I'm up at 4AM 2-3 times a week training for a marathon.

The historic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Saint-Omer, in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France, was ravaged by arson Sept. 2.

On July 12, the Observatoire du Patrimoine Religieux, an association working to preserve and promote France’s religious heritage, told AFP that 27 churches had been burnt down in 2023 and 12 in the first six months of 2024. Attacks on religious monuments in recent years account for approximately 90% of the 1,000 or so anti-Christian acts recorded annually by the country’s Ministry of Interior.

This is pretty troubling. I had no idea things were this bad in France.

I agree, however, it does seem as though there are a lot of people over there who are afraid to acknowledge this.

Particularly the politicians. The man on the street will assign the blame in a NY minute. The % of French who are protestant is infinitesimally small and they and the Catholics made peace long ago. The percentage is overwhelming nominally Catholic, who enter the church twice - baptism and funeral. Most estimate the Muslim population to be around 10% - five and a half million or so. When you take the percentage of those millions who are radicalized, it's a wonder France has any churches standing. The little chapel right underneath my SIL's house in their little village dates to 1505...

Yes and for the life of me, I do not understand why the EU is doing this. Hungary is refusing the mandatory migrant stuff and are now being fined. Western civilization isn't dying; it's being murdered out in the open.

Part of it is that migrants are filling a demographic void in most north hemisphere countries - here, even more in Europe. Western civilization was simply withering away. Merkel understood that and took a gamble that they could absorb the migrants and make useful Germans of them. It didn't work for a variety of reasons.

Thankfully, our immigrant situation here is very, very different. Most of the people who cross the southern border share most of our beliefs and culture and so assimilation is much easier. Just take care of a few basics like:

1. Get a job
2. Pay your taxes
3. Obey our laws and
4. Wear deodorant.

Knock those four things out and all I can say is, "Welcome home, my new fellow citizen!" Europe's big problem is that many of the new faces showing up over there have no incentive to do any of those things. And yeah, it's easy to blame politicians, but it's like I always say: you get what you vote for.
