There have been some strange hires at schools in the southeast this year. Tennessee, Clemson, and now Auburn. All 3 could have done better IMO. Proven winners were available throughout the country (Leach, Petersen, Kelly, Graham, Whittingham, etc) but they instead decided to take chances on assistants and coaches with dubious records. I don't get the thinking behind this. It's not like any of the three are short of money.

I can't wait for the presser. It's going to blow that bizarre Petrino/Arkansas announcement out of the water.

Who else is eagerly anticipating Finebaum's monologue at 2:05 pm Monday?

No offense meant by this, but any other year and MSU's hire would have been the worst, this year though, they appear to have outdone themselves and have hired potentially a better coach than any of the other schools mentioned.

I (and most on this board) know why they didn't go after Charlie Strong. Coach Strong is going to make somone a great HC one day soon. But, I cannot understand how they allow Miss State to get a better coach than them. Pretty funny stuff.

Reports: Auburn hires Iowa State's Gene Chizik
Auburn has reportedly hired Iowa State's Gene Chizik as its new football coach.

The Birmingham News, Mobile Press-Register and Rivals.com reported Saturday that the former Auburn defensive coordinator will succeed Tommy Tuberville, who resigned following 10 seasons.

An Auburn spokesman said no announcement was scheduled for Saturday and an Iowa State spokesman also said he couldn't confirm the reports.

Chizik is 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State after stints running the defenses at Auburn and Texas. He coached the nation's top scoring defense in his third and final season with the Tigers.

I would have responded to this thread earlier, but I had to pick myself up off of the floor from laughing and wipe the juice I spewed on to the computer screen when I read the news.

The barn may have made a bone head move here, but he just became an instant millionaire and is set for life; even if his tenure is short lived. At least, he can laugh all the way to the bank.

From Auburn's prospective, how could they do this? He has only won five games in two years, and none this year in the Big 12. From Auburn's prospective, that has got to hurt.

Auburn AD Jay Jacobs declines to confirm or deny Chizik reports
We just had a brief and largely unfruitful talk with Jay Jacobs outside the Auburn/Opelika Robert G. Pitts Airport. Jacobs had just returned from Memphis, where he was believed to be hammering out final details with Gene Chizik.

Jacobs deserves credit for talking to the media, especially given the raving-lunatic fan who was screaming at him as he got off the plane. Click below for Jacobs' comments.

I'm disappointed in the boogs, they acted too hastily, had they been a little more patient, they probably could have found someone with a 0-12 record. :pDT_leb::pDT_ura1::party::hurray::cheers2:

Re: Gene Chizik will be the next Auburn coach

Has there ever been a crowd at the Airport ready to boo, throw things, and yelling mean things at their incoming coach?

This could be history in the making soon from the things I'm reading on the web.....:eek2:

True that MSU also took a chance on an unproven coordinator, but they have fewer resources than the other three and a much tougher road to success. They weren't in a position to be as choosy, but if reports were correct, they at least tried to get Chris Peterson. It seems they had a different mindset than UT CU & AU. Less to lose = freer to make better decisions?

There was a lot of talk about "fit" on the message boards at the bigger three - and a lot of dissing of potential coaches from outside the SEC region. I remember the same sentiment coming from the rest of the SEC when UF hired Meyer, saying he was naive and didn't know what he was getting into, didn't understand the conference, etc. They were very wrong, and I think these concerns about "fit" were wrong now too. A good football coach is a good football coach.
