Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

The game is over. I thought we had missed opportunities and some questionable play calling in at crucial times. It seemed like all night we were in 3rd and 15-20 yards on way to many times. It is what it is though. The sun will still rise tomorrow, Auburn still sucks, and I still want us to play in a BCS Bowl.

Don't post much but for those saying the plays were "cute" in OT.... While the plays were not pound the ball they had a chance. If the throw to Trent on the Wheel route would have been 6 inches inside we would have been calling that a great play call. AJ should have not taken the sack but how many sacks did he have in the game?

And for those saying we got cute in the 4th... if Williams would have held onto the Maze pass then we call that play great. Or if Gibson would not have brough the safety across Williams would have been wide open. Coaches call plays and players have to execute. We missed on a couple of plays that in the end cost us. In no way am I criticizing the players. They played well against a very good team. If we played that game 9 more times I think we win most of them.

Now if you want to talk about pinning them deep and playing D I can see where some might question those calls. But at the same time if one of those FG goes through the uprights we are a lot happier tonight.

Overall it was a tough game to swallow but have to agree with Coach Saban's post game comments that we should be proud of our players. They left everything on the field. And I am glad we have a coach that doesn't allow thugs to put on the Crimson uniform.

First of all, we did not get out coached, out-physicalled, or anything else. We just got out executed at the end. Our weakness was FG kicker, and that came back to bite us in the end. We couldn't execute in OT. Very simple. I knew as soon as it went to OT we were in big trouble. Our FG kicker couldn't hit anything beyond 30 yds. It is what it is. At some point, Saban and staff are going to have to find a reliable solution at kicker. we've played with fire on special teams and kickoffs the entire season, and it came back to kill us in this game. You can't win a title without a solid kicker!!!! No way to get around it!!!
That's right. If our offense actually got ten yards in OT instead of losing yards the FGA would have been more manageable. AJ made two bad passes in OT and stupidly took a sack. There is plenty of blame to go around and the kickers are actually towards the bottom of my list.

We made a lot of mistakes, but we most definitely got out coached in terms of game management. Just to put in perspective how some of the poor decisions affected us, digest this:

LSU had 239 total yards (including OT).
Randle had 2 catches for 19 yards.
We snagged 2 INTs.
LSU was just 3 of 11 on 3rd down.
We punted only TWICE in the entire game.

And we lost.

Congratulations to Bama for a great, hard fought game. LSU was fortunate to come away with the win. I think both teams played hard and neither really deserved to lose.

Matthieu's play was stupid and it was uncalled for. His emotions got the better of him.

Although it was close, I think the interception at the goal line was the right call. Terrific play by Reid and I do think the receiver never had posession . . .at least according to the rule as written these days.

Your defense played its heart out. Even tougher loss for them

Again, seriously, it was a great game, and I wish you the best for the rest of the season.

Agree. But in my 48 year history with watching this program, in my humble opinion, Snake and Joe Willie were the last great QBs Bama has had. Todd and others decent. But, not in the NFL calibur area. So, it has been over 40 years since a real dominate QB ran this team in my opinion. One that you just knew was going out there and kick butt. What we used to say: "that guy is a stud." We ain't had a QB like that in . . . . . . . . . . . .
Um, did you understand my post. The three you named were not rated more highly than AJ or Sims. From there, it's a mixture of development and God-given talent surfacing. You just can't pick out Favre in the crib...

It's looking like over recent years that CLM is the better coach - not that I want to trade, between the two I'll take Saban, but Miles has his number.
I don't know about the better coach part but not arguing with you as the numbers don't lie. I just can not believe "3rd and Chavis" is making all the defensive calls.............. Who is helping him?

I agree that CJM left me scratching my head, too. Sort of got the feeling we gave up on the run there for a while. The OT series (particularly 3rd Down) was like something off Tecmo Bowl. With that said, if Maze steps into the throw, and the catch is not bobbled, then were are likely talking about about how good our defense played.

By the way, our Defense kept us in the game and would have won this game for us. Hats off to them.

I love CNS and CJM, but there is no way to deny we got outcoached. Miles was smart with the field position and his personnel. Most kickers in the college game are iffy from 45+. And we all have known all season that are kicking game was suspect. So why test it? Why not play for field position? Like I said, I love our guys, but the Hatter got us tonight.

I'm not interested in second guessing the coaches at all...if they are confident they've recruited championship kickers, they're far more knowledgeable than I...but goodness I wish some of the kicks had at least been closer to being good.

The main concern for our team coming into the game was coverage on returns. We did great there. My concern was play calling that cause us to get into long FG situations. The 44yd we should have made, but I doubt many teams in the country will make a 49, 50, and 52 in a game. Sorry not buying it.

Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

I don't think anyone on this board believes they're more qualified to coach UA football, but when you go away from things that are working, you have out-thought yourself. In the 4th quarter drive when Trent was ripping off gains, you shoot yourself in the foot when you get away from it... and risk not only giving up the ball, but the momentum and confidence of the team as well. In OT, you have to hand the ball off to the best player on the field at least once.

If CJM has had one achilles heel in his tenure as OC, it's the fact that sometimes he out-thinks himself and gets away from the bread and butter of the offense. Of course, I'm from the old school that says "run it until they stop it."
This. What is up with that? You have the best running back in the country, and you don't even hand it to him once. I just don't feel like Trent got enough opportunities in the run game tonight.

Re: ****Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. LSU****

I'm assuming Saban tried the FG's because our defense is so good. I'm also assuming he thought points would be at a premium so why not try them. I'm also, also, assuming that CF hits those in practice or they wouldn't have tried them. So, I think the right call was made but execution didn't prevail.

I do agree with everyone that the OT play calling was terrible although didn't AJ just barely miss TR on a wheel route. Maybe that was in regulation. I can't remember now. I also agree that after the interception the play calling got extremely conservative.

I told my wife if this goes into OT we are in trouble. Maybe it was my negative vibes that caused us to lose. Heck, I'll take the blame. Stay off the kids and coaches and just give it to me!!

Coah Saban got us tonight. Those were bad calls on those long FGs. Any other game and Bama is punting.

I don't seem to recall back in those ancient times that recruits were on 87 web sites with ESPN rating them every step of the way. If you think these two were rated better than them, then we are going to just disagree. Coach Bryant brought both in and I think he knew talent as good as Saban or some ESPN talking head.

I agree. Those are hard for NFLers on some occassions.
