Sadly we were outcoached again...

Saban said in an interview before the game that you only take calculated risks and you accept that you will be criticized when they fail. Well, he took many calculated risks in this game. Too many for this team, with this defense and these kickers. His strategy failed.

Yes, it is a game of calculated risks. Should he have gotten "lucky" during one of those 5 opportunities, he would be a rock star this morning. This team was not, if anything, ill-prepared, which is what we ask a head coach to do. As far as second guessing his decision, why not let the talking heads do that? I think the fans should be pleased with the effort the team gave yesterday. That level would have won the game against any opponent. I also think the same effort given again by this team against even this LSU team will be rewarded with victory.

The offense bogged down....p.e.r.i.o.d.! They marched all night long and did something stupid or allowed L.S.U. to make a big play keeping us out of the red zone. It's not like we only have 7 plays to score and if we don't the guys just run out of steam or can't make another play. We killed ourselves with bad plays.

I guess I'd just like to know what incredibly ingenious coaching decisions Miles made that qualifies him as having out coached Coach Saban.

Basically he watched his team get whipped all over the field and you better know he realizes he's very lucky that we made critical mistakes that kept his team in the game.

I think that you are confused. It is possible to believe that Saban is the best coach in America and also recognize that he will not be the best coach in every game.

I think you are confused. My comment dealt with is it appropriate to call out coach Saban after this 3 point loss, and what type of person would do that, to which I suggested was a short sighted, reactionary bloke.

should have tried to win the game at the end of regulation. Once it went to overtime, I was like, "Oh fudge!" *Except I didn't say fudge*

Understand that I am not criticizing our players - they did their best, and their best was pretty amazing. I question the decision making of our coaching staff.

I think Saban is the best coach in America, but I think he had a really bad day yesterday. I'd still take him over Miles every time.

I'd like to hear this as well. No one seems to be able to give specifics.

Bingo! If Saban got outcoached last night, he outcoached himself. There were some bizarre decisions made; but LSU and Miles basically had nothing to do with it.

Depends on what you mean by "calling out". Again, you can believe that you have the best coach in America while still recognizing that he will not be the best coach in every game. There is nothing "reactionary" about that, is there? Or do we have to hold all criticism of Saban because we believe that he is the best coach in America? I mean, if that is a board rule, I am happy to comply, but it just doesn't make sense to keep putting this on the players by saying that they "failed to execute" instead of the coaching staff.

Had we been watching two other teams play, everyone on this board would be questioning the decisions.

And there's nothing wrong with voicing your opinion. This is a message board after all. It's just a lot happier place after a big win. :)

It isn't so much that Miles did anything specific. He simply let his team play within itself and didn't let his players take unnecessary risks. He slow played this game in much the same way that Coach Stallings would have. Had Bama won, he probably would have been criticized for not taking more risks. Such is the nature of coaching.

Thanks - this is a great board - glad I finally found it. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I just want you to understand what I mean, because I don't want anyone to think that I don't support this team or coaching staff 100%.

I wouldn't go as afar about CNS being out coached. Our players needed to make key plays and there were cruicial penalties and mental mistakes made. He and his coaches can't run on the field and exicute the plays like they should be run. Our guys gave it thier best and I am proud of them.

This is a great board. You should see Tidesports.com this morning. I can't believe I paid for that.
As for agreeing with you... you make a lot of valid points. I am playing devils advocate about the long FGs.

I think you and I are all alone in our assessment of trying the field goals. But I definitely feel where you are coming from. 47 yards is not out of his range. He's just very inconsistent and if he makes... we win. Roll Tide

Here is what I posted a few days ago
Just some thoughts. I see Bama winning by 7. Getting off to a fast start and holding on for dear life. I believe the absence of Cyrus is bigger than many think because our line is better when he is in the game in certain situations.

Say a prayer for our field goal kicker's.

First, our kickers had not kicked under any type of pressure all year, and our long range kicker had barely kicked at all. If anyone wants to blame coaching, then the way we are obtaining our kickers needs to be addressed.

Since Michael Proctor's recruitment in 1991, our best field goal specialist were all original Walk-ons, including Leigh Tiffin. Gene Stalling's system of letting a bunch of Walk-ons battle it out seemed to work well and we continued the tradition for the most part. We have had many very good to excellent FG kickers in the past 20 years.

Here are all the recruited scholarship FG specialist since Proctor was recruited in 1991

1997 A.J Diaz = Never kicked in a game
2001 Mike McLaughlin = Never kicked in a game
2008 Corey Smith = Beat out by Walk-on
2010 Cade Foster = Only kicks long shots. Only three attempts in first 8 games this year
2010 Jay Williams = Never kicked

We need to invite every good FG kicker in the state and have FG day every Spring or fall. Offering scholarships to kicker out of HS has been a colossal failure like no other on the team.
