I don't know who this reminds me of most: Curley Hallman, Gerry DiNardo, or Woody Widenhofer. At least Curley had some success at Southern Miss as HC. The roadside ditches of college football are filled with coaches who were solid coordinators but abject failures as head coaches. It's one thing to take a chance on an upstart coordinator. It's another to hire a proven HC'ing failure.

Jacobs was on the plane with university President Jay Gogue and other athletic department officials, reportedly returning from a trip to Memphis, where Chizik's agent, Jimmy Sexton, is based. A couple of dozen fans greeted the plane and some of them heckled the Auburn officials for apparently choosing a coach with a losing record.
That's hilarious. It sounds like they're none too pleased with the hire.

Gotta love how NBC 13 here in Birmingham tries to spin it as a good hire by interviewing some dorky former Auburn kicker that was on the team when cheesehead was there. "He's a great coach and didn't have enough time to turn around Iowa state" LOL

From a barner buddy of mine - "I'm hoping at the press conference, someone asks Cheezestick what he meant when he said that you can't win a championship at Auburn when he left to go to Texas." :)

The Auburn nation is suppose to unite behind this guy when they couldn't even unite behind Tubs, who has the 4th most wins in AU history? They trade and winning coach who had a down year for a guy who only managed 5 wins in two years? This hire makes no sense. I feel bad for my sister (an AU grad) but, the Bama fan in me is loving this with every bone in my body.

Let the Barn coaching carousel begin! How many coaches will AU go through before they finally land "the one?" Tubs got a great deal though. He can sit at home with is 5 million and not have to deal with the crazy AU boosters anymore.

Increasingly I find myself thinking that Tubs is the one that really came out looking like a champ in this whole mess.....and looking better by the day. For some of them that couldn't get him out the door fast enough you'd think now that he had actually won the national championship. Now, it may get bad enough over there that everyone at the barn will appreciate what he accomplished there.

Oh I think they will unite, just not in the way they were hoping for...

Here is a quote from Chizik:

"I am dedicated to working tirelessly to win championships. We will not be outworked in any facet of the building process. I'm excited to get on the recruiting trail, meeting with the current players and reconnecting with past players. We want to develop young men into champions not only on the playing field, but in the classroom and in the community."

Someone remind this man that he is now that coach at AUBURN! He seems confused...talking about champions.

Monte Kiffin is only one of the greatest defensive minds in the history of football... Orgeron is one of the greatest recruiters in all of college football (previous recruiter of the year)... Not to mention a couple others who have yet to be announced!

I guess your going to tell me Steele is better than Kiffin?!?!?
Monte Kiffin hasn't been in the college game in a while. Success in the professional ranks doesn't always translate to success in the college ranks. Just because you are a successful coordinator in the NFL doesn't mean that you'll provide a "decided schematic advantage" in the collegiate game.

Kiffin may come in and have one of the top defenses in the country, but Steele has produced one of the top defenses in the country this year. When Kiffin produces a better college defense than Steele, then he will be considered a better collegiate assistant than Steele.

Very nice post. Although discounting Monte seems a bit "biased" on your part....

No doubt, Saban is an awesome college HC! However, the only common coaching comparison between Monte and Saban is the NFL.... Only one of these gentleman was actually successful in the NFL, and it wasn't Saban.

Well in that comparison of Saban's 2 year stint in the NFL he had a positive 9 wins season (when taking over a 3 win team) and then a disappointing 6 win season (when losing his starting QB and probably best RB in Ricky Williams). The 15 games he won match the 15 the Bucs won in 05 and 06, and in comparison of the defenses...Saban's blew Monte's out of the water both years.

Saban's defense didn't blow Monte's out of the water both years. In 2005, Saban's defense ranked 18th in total defense, 15th in scoring defense, 17th in rushing defense and 20th in passing defense. Kiffin's defense was respectively ranked 1st, 8th, 6th and 6th.

By 2006, however, Saban's defense had basically swapped places with Kiffin's. The Dolphin's defense was ranked 4th in total defense, 5th in scoring defense, 8th in rushing defense and 5th in passing defense while Kiffin's ranked 17th, 21st, 17th and 19th respectively.

So, by the second year, Saban had a defense that almost matched the effectiveness of one of Kiffin's typical defense (yes, the 2006 season was an aberration -- typically Kiffin's defenses are ranked in the top ten across all categories with the quite-often exception of rushing defense). It can't be known if Saban could have matched the consistency of Kiffin in producing good defenses, but in his short NFL career, he produced one that matched up well.
